Hey guys, my second gear has been doing some weird bucking under pressure at 10000+ rpm for a while now but today, i was picking up speed in second gear and it randomly popped out of second gear, into first gear which threw me forward. I tried doing it again and it keeps popping out of second into first, throwing me forward and then it doesnt wanna go back into gear easily. kinda scary. Can anyone please help me diagnose this and maybe tell me how much it would cost to fix? Thanks

Since I'm no expert I'm inserting this disclaimer in advance for all the expert haters out there who love to bash general forum goers for giving terrible "advice". While I'm mechanically inclined and do most of my own car and bike wrenching, I'm not a certified mechanic by any means. So... now that's over with...

Sounds to me like the dogs are worn. No idea about cost of repair.

As the others said.

As for fixing it: It depends on the bike and how easy it is to get at the transmission. I'm guessing you'd have to pull and split the engine, which would run up a fair price labour wise if you get a mechanic to do it.
You'd also need to buy another tranny (or whatever parts you need to fix it) but that shouldn't cost a whole lot.

Call bike salvage yards and find a motor from a wreck. It'll be cheaper than a repair.

Take it to Pro 6 and let them take a look at it. And stop doing what you're doing so you don't kill yourself!! :-)

What kind of bike is it? year model kms?

thanks everyone. yeah as some mentioned up there, my bike was acting weird in second for a while but it was never a big issue and i didnt fix it because it was a big job and now its apparently gone. anyways, thanks again for your replies

You don't absolutely need 2nd gear.

Keep riding, and then when your drive fails completely you can start another thread hoping that it's only chain slack and that you don't actually have a transmission problem.

i cant really defend myself here can i? :D but as a small defense, it wouldn't have made any difference because even if i tried fixing it before, itd cost almost exactly the same as it does now since the labor would've been the same. but i see all your points. gotta go make a new account here lol

Haha! Don't worry about it. IF it's the dogs or shift drum, yeah, it's a big job. But don't panic yet! Take it to Pro 6 and let them check your shifter and detents out. Maybe it's not a big deal. It won't really cost you more because if second was on the way out, you'd have to tear it down anyway. But for the sake of the baby jesus, don't keep givin' her when it's popping out of second! You could have a nasty accident.
