Plate question

I bought my bike new and I'm getting ready to get my insurance/registration/plates in order for the beginning of April. On my invoice from the dealership there is an $80 "License fee", is that for my plates? Just wondering exactly how to go about this. The dealer explained it to me when I purchased the bike but I can't remember now.

I know I need insurance first, just wondering about that fee and how I go about getting the ownership and plates/stickers. Thanks!

Get insurance, forward insurance details to the dealership, and for $80 you better be receiving a plated bike, with appropriate sticker & the ownership sorted.

They already delivered the bike a few weeks ago, unplated. I got lucky when they were picking up some Goldwings in the area that mine could squeeze on board for free delivery. So once I send my valid insurance info to them I can go pick up my plate/sticker and ownership from the dealership? Do I need to go to a ServiceOntario at all?

You shouldn't have to, no. Why don't you just call the dealership?

The dealership will send someone to Service Ontario to do the transfer/reg/plate. Typically done before you pick up the bike, but since it was delivered early, they'll have to complete this and you can pop into the dealership to get the plates. There may be an adjustment to the $80 depending upon your birthdate/sticker...

motorcycle plate costs $20
motorcycle sticker for a year costs $42
------------------------------------
So it costs $62 to get a bike plated at the mto with documents (for used you will need uvip & safety document)

Did you receive a new bike without plates on it? That's really odd.

Have you got an ownership? What does it say about plates?
Contact the dealer... if you don't have an ownership in your name, you don't own the bike yet.

Apples and oranges guys.
If he has a bill of sale, he owns the motorcycle.
It has to be registered and plated by the Ministry before it can be operated on the street.
Two entirely different things.
Once the insurance has been completed, take copies of the insurance to the dealer.
They charged you a fee for a plate. They can get you the plate or refund the $80.

Although we call it "the ownership" the paper you get from the Ministry is not a certificate of ownership.
It is a certificate that the vehicle and the person who owns it has been registered with the Ministry and a plate number has been assigned.
It is therefore legal to operate the vehicle on the street.

Yes I received the bike with no "ownership" but I do have the bill of sale with my name and matching vin. Some people in another thread also couldn't understand a new bike being delivered. It doesn't need plates in a delivery van!

Great description, thanks :)

Did you receive a safety certificate with the bill of sale? If so all you need is your insurance and you can get your plates for about $62 as long as you don't owe parking tickets or 407 fees, the dealer should refund the $80.00.

I just noticed you are in Keswick, is you name Kyle? The reason I ask is because my brother in law's neighbour recently picked up a bike. Just wondering if you are that guy.

I'm willing to bet there are as many Kyles in Keswick as there are Joes in Woodbridge ?

lol. WTF! you Ontarians have to pay $42 bux a year for a sticker? It is included when you buy insurance here in BC.

also i like our way better. You buy bike. If dealer has already prepped it and is ready to ride. They call an ICBC broker and in about 30min
they at the dealer. You buy insurance / plate and get sticker right there on the spot. Put plate on bike. Drive away happy.

Yeah, nothing is easy here in Ontario. From my experience in buying a new vehicle it takes almost a week from he time you buy the vehicle to pick up.

Yeah its a bit weird how they do it. I remember it taking almost a week when I bought my car new. BTW my name is Justin, most people call me JP. 2 weeks till MSF and a legal bike :D I did see another guy in town on a black/yellow CBR300, I think he had an alpine stars jacket and a yoshi pipe.

Hey Justin
Yeah he has an aftermarket pipe so that's probably him. Let me know if you want to take ride when the weather improves, me and a few friends get together on Sunday mornings and take a ride, we all ride different bikes s you will fit right in.
