Plastic welding

Can anyone advise of a good place to get some plastic welding done? Thanks.....appreciate any suggestions you may have.

If the crack isn't to large you can do it yourself a soldering iron and some ABS cement.

1) Take your plastic off the bike
2) Use the soldering iron (**EDIT** - with a flat chisel tip) on the inside of the plastic to slightly warm and melt the plastic along the crack. Careful not to add to much heat so you don't melt the plastic all the way through to the visible side. You just want the crack to sort of fuse together.
3) Let the plastic cool. (only takes a couple of minutes).
4) Take the ABS cement and smear it with the applicator it over the crack you just melted together. Try to overlap the the crack by at least 1/8" with the ABS cement.
5) Let the ABS cement cure. It doesn't take long but I let it sit over night.
6) Place your plastic back on the bike.

I was given this info on another forum a couple of years ago to fix 1/4" crack on the bottom of my tail fairing that was there when I bought the bike. Worked for me and it's still solid today.

For larger cracks or missing plastic pieces you may very well need a plastic welding service.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I usually use a technique very similar to 00ninja's. Instead of the ABS cement, I will use a piece of plastic the same colour if available, otherwise I will use the cement. Also, I use a flat smoothing tip on the soldering iron.

Yes agreed. I forgot to mention that it's a flat chisel tip on the soldering iron.

I believe that Home Hardware still sells Plastex. Directions are on the package.
I've used it to create new fairing tabs that have snapped off and fill in cracks.

Look up on YouTube on how to repair motorcycle fairings. There is this guy who shows how he does it using a soldering iron with a flat tip.

If you do not have any plastic kicking around... Broken deck chair, rashed up fairings, etc.

Lego and some (very little) Acetone work wonders for creating a liquid plastic that goes on like butter and fills cracks up real nice. Just be prepared to tell the kids why their Legos went missing =)

bring it to me and I'll plastic weld it professionally........... it's not that expensive , and it will be done right the first time........... I have the proper tools and know-how........ cheers, Les
