Partzilla (awesome) and CrossBorderPickups (terrible)

Needed an oil pan for my bike. Local shops were quoting me $440 plus tax and it would take a few weeks from Yamaha. Partzilla somehow had one in stock (the pan only fits my Super Tenere, a fairly low volume bike) for $280 after currency conversion with free US shipping. Was delivered to Buffalo in 2-3 business days and then brought to Toronto by CrossBorderPickups (more on them later). Unfortunately the pan was dropped on an edge at some point and wasn't usable without some work. Can't really blame them as it was packaged and there was no way for them to know. Quick phone call to them and they sent me a return label with the promise to send me another pan (they had a second pan in stock, just wow) as soon as I dropped the original pan off at UPS. No pictures, no headache, just a simple conversation. New pan arrived in perfect shape with the packaging open, I assume they opened it and checked it to be sure it was good before sending it out. Great service and pricing, will definitely use them again.

Unfortunately CrossBorderPickups was another story. I had used them a handful of times pre-Covid and had great experiences. Ship it to their address in Buffalo and they'll bring it to Toronto for you, $10 per package and you pay whatever duty is charged at time of pickup. Not sure if they changed ownership but they are much worse now. It is still $10 per package, but they make you pre-pay duty at full price regardless of what CBSA charges you. Wasn't happy about it with the first package, but whatever. The second oil pan is when things went downhill. They refused to let me submit it as a $0 item even though it was a warranty replacement and I had an invoice to prove it. They wanted me to pay full duty on the retail price of the item, then pay them $10 for a form which I would then have to submit to CBSA to try and get reimbursed. Wouldn't let me drive to Buffalo and pick it up either. Ended up mocking up an invoice for $40 for them to bring it over the border though I know the duty would be $0. To top it off they seem to be a lot slower bringing stuff over compared to before, they had the second pan last Thursday it was ready to pickup on Wednesday. In the future, will just ship stuff to usaddressinc and drive over and pick it up.

I gave up on Partzilla a while back when it stopped forking for me in Chrome. Works in Edge, but not worth switching just for them. Just tried again, and still same problems:

I stopped using CrossBorderPickups as well. Was good for a bit, then things went strange. I started using Shippsy. They seem ok.

The only time I used shippsy, I had to preauthorize a charge for duty. The problem was, I had to preauthorize over $5000 for a few hundred in plumbing parts. Like gas station pre-auth, when I went to pick it up, I had invoice for reasonable duty and the expected service charge. I did not like the huge pre-auth required. If that went wrong, it would be spectacularly bad.

Good to know about CBP - I had used them before and they were alright, but it's been a while now

I just tried shippsy apparently I tried shipping banned goods. (Kids booster seats) not their problem and I had no idea. They are letting me pick them up at the US warehouse far enough.

The list of banned items is pretty long. I found it interesting that they banned lawn-care products but they cross with no issues when shipped conventionally. Probably want to avoid stepping on toes for importing banned chemicals (that can only be used here on golf courses and municipal parks so obviously they are incredibly dangerous).

I also tried to bring in a part via cross border pickups that had no cost and they gave me a headache.
Free, old, used Fiber PCI card for a computer. Cost me $0.00 as the sender even paid for shipping and they wanted to put it to use instead of landfill. Specially item that was still functional.
I needed to have them make up an invoice for $20 just to satisfy CBP
Their explanation was they they dealt with commercial shipping only where invoices are provided.

If you want your family to send you a birthday gift via CBP, you might as well find a different way unless they make up and invoice.

Oh and their customer service is horrible.
No phone number to call. Only via chat/email.
