Parking your bike at a GO station

Anyone have experience with this? From what I know GO parking lots are pretty bad for theft/abuse. The bike is insured but I would still be upset if it were stolen. Secondly, I wouldn't want to carry any of my equipment so I would be squid with my helmet attached to the back seat.

Don't park anything at a GO station that is worth more than a '79 Ford Fairmont.

Thieves know that all the owners of all those vehicles in the parking lot are gone for hours at a time. Prime territory for theft and vandalism.

Your location states GTA East

FWIW The parking spots at the Whitby Go-Train station are fairly visible, lots of MC park there during the day.

I don't see any motorcycles parked at the station I go to. Riding squid is another concern. I'm an ATGATT kind of guy and I'm not sure I want to forgo the equipment. With both issues I think I'll just ride more after work.

I'm a new rider, and daily GO train commuter. I've been taking my bike to the station for the past month and there are usually a couple of motorcycles\scooters at my station and at most stops on my line.

I do lug my helmet and jacket back and forth.

So far, its been all good for me but the whole idea of theft/abuse at the parking lot through the day has crossed my mind....

People don't seem to think this way at my lot....chock full of Bimmers, Benzes and Audis.

I've parked my bike at a couple of GO stations, never had a problem. At one, mine was the only bike (there was a scooter, but hardly counts). At the other, there was one other bike, a small displacement (250 maybe) late 70s/early 80s Yamaha (actually kinda cool, guy had done a mild café customization). Only problem I've ever had was at Brampton (figures, whole place is one big sh*thole) GO station, where some strung out, crackhead PoS broke into my truck and tore out the ignition switch in his failed attempt to steal it. He got busted a few hours later breaking into another car. The worst part of the whole thing was dealing with GO Transit security. Arrogant, ignorant, chip-on-the-shoulder wannabe rentacops.

... fully insured and immobilizer-equipped. The tow truck that would be needed to steal any of those would be a wee bit obvious.

A friend bought a junker bicycle to ride to the GO station. It broke down so he had to use his better bike (nothing great, maybe $600 value). The 3rd day he used it, he came back to find it stolen.

I know bicycles, motorcycles and cars are all quite different with regard to theft susceptibility, but you should be cautious. I wouldn't consider leaving a helmet (or anything else) hanging on the bike. Probably helps to have an alarm & disc lock if you're going to leave it. Avoid habits, i.e. parking in the same spot, potentially use 2 different stations if its convenient. It doesn't take thieves long to spot an opportunity.

My car stereo was stolen twice in a two-week period at a GO lot. I wanted to hide razor blades in my car as a nice surprise for their likely third attempt on my car, but I was worried about the liability.

I would never consider leaving my bike there.

My friend parked his 4door BMW M3 at a GO parking spot once and I guess some dude was jealous so decided to key it completely from front to back!

Its like come on already!

Most go parking lots have motorcycle parking up at the front. Much harder to steal something that isn't hidden by hundreds of cars.

Oshawa GO has 1 spot that I am aware of that will hold 4 bikes and no more. It is at the front.

The design is old and poor though because what they did was they took 1-2 car spaces, painted some lines and put up a sign saying ok to park here but it is still next to all the car spots.

I was in Ottawa this past week and where I was staying, they had the motorcycle parking in a very cool configuration I had never seen before. In the centre of the lot they set up a triangular shape with concrete and the gaps were big enough for bikes to enter and leave but not cars so no worries about cars stealing the accessible spot or accidentally backing into the bikes and knocking them over.

Update: 8 spots for bikes, not 4.

Of course the whole work clothes and gear issue doesn't really lend itself to a quick commute to the station. Wish there was an easier solution.
