Parking ticket - Bike was moved...

Hey Folks,

Wondering if anyone has had experience with the following:

I was parked on a side street, metered parking area. I was at the front of the parking zone, just behind the post. As the area got busy someone moved my bike to allow more parking space for themselves, pushing my front tire past the post. Back tire was still behind. I believe in the eyes of the law if you are passed the sign, that's a $60 fine.

I'm going to court for this tomorrow, and was wondering if I had any recourse. I'm not guilty of the offense, someone else moved my bike... I know the area quite well, and have been warned about parking tickets there, so I am always quite vigilant about making sure I'm parked properly.

I actually had my bike moved one other time outside of the zone, but got lucky that time.

Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the court / legal process

Thanks.

I realize this isn't answering your question, but I'm curious if you lock the steering on your bike?

If you have pictures that show the drag marks from the tire, from your original location to the one to which the bike was moved, then you might have some recourse. Otherwise all that you can do is count on the massive backlog of tickets to result in it being dropped, which is becoming more rare as the city struggles to capture every defunct penny that it can.

Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately I have no steering or disc lock. However, I do now park in a much better spot!

I seem to be low on evidence, so I guess I'll just plead my case in court and see how it plays out.

Huh. I thought that the Viragos had a steering lock on the stem, itself, down below the headstock?

I've never thought to look into it before, but it seems like it may have at least once had a steering lock. Although I am unable to engage it. Nothing on the stem, but I do seem to be able to push the ignition switch in. It's an 85, so there could be some mechanical issue. Gives me another project to dig into... I really need to change the whole ignition switch anyway.

On the Viragos that I've seen, including my '87 XV535, the steering lock was behind an oblong silver cover with a screw on one side, that acted as a pivot. It was on the left side of the steering stem area, of the front of the frame. it could only be engaged if the bars were turned all the way to the left. If you can't get that working, then I would suggest something like a Xena alarmed disk lock.

Meh that was a waste of time, should have taken the $10 plea, but it was a matter of principal. Oh well lesson learned, the city gets their money and I get the shaft...

I was going to say, you should've parked a little more away from the sign (so instead of being 5" you would be like 1-2ft.) so it would've been much harder to move the bike or people wouldn't even consider moving your bike.
