Parking outside

Hey all,

I'm aware that theft is a big problem in the GTA. I'm kind of in the situation where if I want to ride this season I have to keep the bike outside. It's only a 250 so theft isn't very expensive, but I'd hate to lose my baby. I can't believe it, but part of me is considering not riding to keep the bike safe in storage. Other than say invest in a lock and cover, what should I do?

I thought about selling the bike and getting something older/worth less. Do people generally steal 250s? Have you guys had experience keeping bikes outdoors?

People will steal anything that makes them Money

If you don't have parking
Why not look into a storage unit

Not that this makes it feel any better. I'm slightly paranoid about parking my bike anywhere. But as a friend and rider told me, get it fully insured. No point worrying about it. If it gets stolen, get a new bike.
I have a few fiends who park outside and never had any problems.

Get a disc lock..and get theft insurance. It's just a frickin bike! "If you cry for a nickel, you'll die about a dime.."

Really, you would consider not riding because of the potential of your bike getting stolen? If the thieves have already stolen your freedom, who cares about a bike after that. Just insure it and ride it like today is your last day, don't worry about tomorrow!

*Edit - Oh yeah, my bike and my previous bike have been stored outside just under a cover for 7 years now with no issues at all and I live downtown. Just lucky I guess....knock on wood.

Here is a cheap security mod, put a sticker or plate or some sort (make it look legit) somewhere on your bike stating you have real time GPS tracking. I mean, in the end if the thieves really wanted your bike, they will get it, but at least it will make the n00b thieves think twice.

You got nothing to lose, and it can't hurt, might as well go for it.

Last year a member's girlfriend had her Ruckus stolen. All 2-wheel contraptions are at risk, just something we've got to live with. My suggestion: snuggle up with your neighbours where ever you park on the regular. They'll know you, recognize your bike and know if anything fishy is going on.

Well... Really anything that isn't being watched over, isn't bolted to the ground, and is worth any amount of money is at risk of being stolen. I'm sure if I leave my $15 gloves out on my bike someone would steal it.

No doubt, but I was referring to the OP's consideration towards selling the 250 for an older/cheaper bike.

Scumbags steal copper eaves troughs from churches for scrap and urns from cemetaries. Someone hacksawed a statute from a park in Burl-Oak area. Get full coveage insurance and use due diligence. If it happens just suck it up and adjust your life.
A couple of guys can have a bike into a van in a minute. Dirty licence plate and hoodies and they're out of sight before you finish calling the cops.

buy a cover, a nice lock and theft insurance.... then try to live your life without being scared of your own shadow.

Here is a guaranteed anti-theft solution, and it only costs $5. Buy a quart of oil and pour a good amount underneath the bike, problem solved :)

I have a friend that has to park outside, he got a really crappy looking cover from princess auto and a brown spraybomb and sprayed around the bottom of the cover so it looks filthy and old. No idea if it helps, but the bike is three yr old now and still there.
