Painting my scraped tank and buying replacement fairings - 04 GSXR1000

I had a wonderful high-side over a month ago where I scraped the left side of my tank. I've been taking it to body shops and all are mentioning they'll need to sand down and repaint the entire thing, (reapplying the factory stickers) which will run between $300-400 (plus $150 for stickers), and involving completely removing the gas tank for them. I'm looking for a quicker more cost effective alternative as the bike is a 2004 with 70,000km.

Here's some pictures from different distances. The scrapes are just below the silver graphic which I'd like to keep in tact. I'm wondering if I'm better off doing it myself by sanding it down a bit more to remove all the rust in the grooves (and try to smooth out the ridge where the metal meets the paint), putting primer, and trying as best I can to spray it gloss black... or do I just suck it up and take it to someone else who can do a better job then me.

I'm fine with their being a flat spot due to the wear down, but what I'd like to achieve is a somewhat smooth gradual finish to it, where the paint blends as much as possible and doesn't look like a complete hack job.

Also, I'm looking at purchasing new replacement OEM fairings (as I can't find any used) for the side and tail. I've been looking into buying the cheap alternatives from China, but I've heard nothing but nightmare stories with screws not aligning, and melting plastics.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

I've heard those that are injection molded are good

I bought a set of replacement fairings from auctmart.com and they fit amazing. Had to open the odd hole but for a fraction of the cost it was worth it.

Well I have a bit of experience here......the chinese fairings are all over the map I have seen them fit ok and seen them fail miserably and after installing aprox 50 sets I cant tell which are good and which are not, So its buyers beware.
As for the tank unless your going to get it painted right it will stand out anyway save your time an put a sticker over it. the price your quoted is possibly a bit high but not too much its a PIA to strip it and repair (scrape right on a bend makes it tougher than just a dent). Next problem your going to have is the chinese fairings are not going to match the tank.

Interesting note about the chinese fairings not matching the tank. I'd imagine since it's a standard gloss black, there wouldn't be much of an issue there?

For the tank, I'm thinking I'll sand it down a bit to remove any rust, put some primer and then spray paint it myself... to seal it so it doesn't rust over the years... then put some sort of sticker over it potentially.

In terms of the chinese fairings, which ones would you recommend based on your experience? No issues with the plastic melting or distorting from the heat?
