Ownership of a used fixer upper

I bought a GS 400 bike very cheap last week for the purpose of fixing it up for my girlfriend. I am from england & find the whole process in Ontario baffling for buying/selling any vehicle, in fact the whole thing drives me batty here lol.

My question is this I have the ownership but the bike will not be ready for the road or my girlfriend licensed/insured (m2 exit) for at least a month. I want to transfer the ownership but obviously there will be no safety for a while or insurance while it is in my garage. I have it running already & it requires a few things for the safety but a lot more to bring it up to a very good condition, I am not going to spend anything much until I know what I have to do.

So can I change the ownership without plates, insurance or safety. I looked at the ministry website but it was no help what so ever. Any help gratefully recieved

Yes ..its simple You go into Mto, You pay your taxes on the bike, bike goes into your name UNFIT No insurace required...

yup what was said above. transfer it into your name unfit and unplated. when it ready to go, bring in the insurance and safety, get the plate. the ownership will be changed to fit and plated.

Hopefully you didn't get it cheap as a salvage bike as you will not be able to plate it ever..... Just my 2 cents

Noits not salvage but been off the road since 2009. Came with a spare salvage bike which has been raped & pilliaged for parts. Tires exhausts caliper seals & rear shocks reseal for the safety then its just cosmetics.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Any chance of pictures? I used to own one some years ago, and I got the feeling that it never saw the road since I sold it lol.

Leave the date blank untill you're ready to sign it over

Sign Date and show Safety in one shot

Why bother getting an unfit ownership when you're just going to do the whole process again in a few months?

IMHO

Expanding on jeffjones' comment. Never put any time or money into a vehicle until you officially own it. What if it's stolen or a wrecker write off?
A friend bought an old car and restored it without getting the ownership. The seller was "Looking" for the ownership. It ended up with him giving the restored car away.
I've see ads in CL and Kijiji for cheap bike, no paper. Someone left it here 4 years ago and I need the space now. The bike isn't his to sell.

LOL ... we are not exactly motorcycle loving province or country for that matter. Bikes are considered toys here, not commuting necessities like in Europe. There will be few more things making your head shake ... have you inquired for an insurance rate yet? Don't think you are buying an old bike that it will cost a few hundred bucks per year ....

That's way it is, you have to take the good with the bad when living here, like anywhere else.

Hi, Im British too, been here a few years and just got my bike on the road. It does look like a daunting prospect, but once you've been through it once, you realise how similar it is compared with back in the UK. I am just grateful that we dont have to go through an MOT equivalent every single year.

Insurance killed me, I'm paying over $2k but I have the bike I want atleast, so whatever, it will be half that next year.

Yeah you can just get the 'unfit' ownership, the guys at the counter are very quick to tell you if you don't have something or you need other supporting docs, I just take everything each time, and give them what they need.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes...
