OPP Trickery...

Dirty, dull grey coloured unmarked OPP Chevy SUV parked in the gulley between the east bound off and on ramps at the highway #37 / #401 interchange. Three marked cruisers parked further up the off ramp road with six or more officers pulling cars over. At the time I drove over the bridge they had a tractor trailer rig and two small cars stopped.
For those not familiar with this exit you have to drive under the #37 overpass, make a right turn heading roughly south west along a short straight before making another right to a “T” intersection at #37, (Cannifton Road). The SUV would be totally invisible to those exiting the highway until they cleared the bridge and by then I’m sure it would be too late. This is the second time this year and the umpteenth time over the past few years I’ve witnessed this roadside tax collection routine in action.

My questions are, why would they stop drivers in such a fashion and what might they be able to charge those stopped with? One might assume it’s speeding but, the off ramp has though yellow caution, suggested speed signs.
A co-worker was stopped at the Nappanee exit the same day but the officer said it was a “RIDE” check. He asked the usual questions, poked his head in then set him on his way. Seems like a lot of wasted man power for 3:30 p.m. on a week day if what I've describe was the same.<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <!-- / message -->

The OPP commonly do stops on the QEW & 407 ramps for seatbelt inspections, maybe they are expanding.

I have no problem with RIDE checks, maybe it isn't as big of a problem/concern in the city but up here seems like there are more than a few people who I have had suspicions about being intoxicated - mostly the older generations if I am honest, though I imagine there are younger drivers as well.

Well, at least we don't have to worry so much if it's seatbelt checks. :D

A few weeks back I saw the same sort of thing on Mavis to 403 East. Looked like a RIDE check. Probably a rotating sweep.

Regarding RIDE in the middle of the day: That's when you'll catch the hard core drunks, who are really the only remaining serious issue.

I know up here in the North the OPP/Local cops like doing them at around 7-10pm on weekdays to try and nab the farmers/factory guys on their way home from the bar after work
