OPP driving style

Last weekend I hit some of the roads in Muskoka, and I had an interesting experience involving an OPP cruiser.

On the 141 going west from 11 towards Rosseau there is a very long, perfectly straight stretch with a speed limit of 60km/h, preceded and followed by a few curves that are completely blind. You CANNOT see further than the apex. So a couple of curves before that straight stretch, I entered the turn riding in my lane, doing the speed limit, when from the opposite direction there was a line of cars, driving in their own lane, doing the speed limit.

In the MIDDLE of the turn, a blacked out OPP cruiser WITHOUT THE LIGHTS ON decided to pass a couple of the cars, going 3/4 into my lane, crossing a double yellow line, in a blind turn. All I could do to avoid him was go on the shoulder, and that actually worked out well enough since I am posting this. :) As soon as he passed me, he turned on his lights to pull one of the cars over.

What scares me about this? If I had been driving a car, there wouldn't have been enough room to avoid him AT ALL, that's how little room he left me. My life was worth less to him than handing out a traffic ticket. If I had gone a bit hotter into the turn, I would be dead right now (my bike and I are capable of safely doing twice the speed limit in such a turn, if an OPP cruiser is not blocking the lane). If I hadn't seen the OPP cruiser in time, I would be dead right now. If I were a new rider, not expecting the unexpected, and I had panicked, I would be dead right now.

So be careful out there guys and gals. Look out for sand, gravel, deer, moose, trucks, cars, and finally OPP cruisers. :p

And a HUGE thanks to EVANS for giving me an allen key that allowed me to fix some unexpected technical difficulties. Thanks man, I truly appreciate it.

I would have turned around and given that cop hell!!! I don't take to that kind of **** at all!! That was unnecessary and deliberate on his part.

That sucks dude.
Did you get the cruisers info?

No, it all happened so fast. All I could think of afterwards was how lucky I was, didn't even consider turning back until it was too late. What really upset me is that somebody must have been speeding on that straight stretch, which for some bizarre reason has a limit of 60km/h, even though it's in the middle of nowhere, without intersections, obstructions or anything warranting less than an 80km/h limit. So the OPP officer was fishing there, and only caught up in the turns. But couldn't wait until he was on another straight, he had to pass in a blind turn...

I would have turned around as well. No need to be a hero because of the badge.

Can't you call up the division and relate your story? Maybe they can have a little chat with the men, and straighten out what the promise stands for. Tell them your confidence has been shaken.

do you have this documented via GoPro or Contour HD?

nowadays, get it on video first, then follow up with precinct, if their response is rather lacking, post up on youtube and send links to media...sit back, eat pop corn...you were lucky, give popo heck if you like, then move on...

You should have turned around and given him a ***** SLAP.....

LOL. You should have turned around, pulled up behind him, got off your bike, walked up to his vehicle, tap on his window, and ask the officer "Do you know why I pulled you over?"

You know the road, the date and the time, the division will know who the driver was (could figure it out based on the ticket). I'd inform the division of what happened.

And my contourHD is in the mail

And if you have to speed to catch him/her, would the ticket be worth it?

Best, to phone it in and assume that it will be dealt with.

Glad to read you came through it OK, croco - sounds like it was close. Another option would have been to first pull over just long enough to make a quick call to cancel your insurance, then lane-split your way back to the cruiser at break-neck speed, tell the cop to bugger-off, then bolt off into the sunset like a champ.

This is the way to go. File a complaint. It works.

Once I get my bike back from service I WILL get a camera to film me at all times. That officer would have gotten into trouble, but as it stands it would be my word against his. And we all know a normal persons' word is worth close to nothing compared to that of a cop.

I've had worse in my riding experience. While in Romania I had a bus severely cut a curve in front of me. I was doing 160km/h, but I had an unobstructed view, so I expected it. I also had two trucks try to pass each other before a turn I exited at about 100km/h, and I managed to pull onto the shoulder with them zooming by a couple of feet away. I've seen enough to expect the unexpected, but given the standards to which the local police and the OPP hold regular drivers, I would expect them to do the same.

If I had pulled such a maneuver, my license would have been suspended, my bike would have been impounded, and I would have had to walk from Rosseau to Toronto. :p

there is an application called Major Case that all OPP officers use EVERYTIME they stop someone. They HAVE to enter data into this app. If you have the time and place of the incident, you should call the OPP office and tell them your story.

On a similar note, I always watch out for a driver overtaking a car in front of him in the direction opposite of mine. When in a one-lane highway, such as the one the OP was riding on, HWY 141, I try and stay in the right tire track when there is a broken yellow line on the other side and when I see a line of cars in the opposite direction. If I am in the left tire track, the driver with the intention of over-taking a car in front of him may not be able to see me. By moving to the right of the lane, I make myself visible.

Of course, no amount of carefullness (is there even such a word? lol) can keep you from being a target of bad-a**, dumb witted drivers.

Is that a serious comment?

I would went back and ripped on that cop, and you know if anything happened, the guy that got pulled over would defend you! But ya that **** happens so fast.

Normal OPP driving style? It's the worst story so far I've heard (or read) but I witnessed a lot of OPP going extremely fast without any cherries on, I even got tailgated one time by an OPP cruiser...I was going at the speed limit, he was going over 150 for sure before and after he tailgated me (was near Bancroft)
