An Ontario Provincial Police sergeant zapped a junior officer with a Taser during a dispute in the force’s Nottawasaga detachment, the Star has learned.
The officer who was hit wasn’t injured in the emotionally charged dispute on Oct. 14 at the detachment in Alliston in the Georgian Bay area, said OPP Insp. Dave Ross.
More than two officers were involved in the ugly incident, but Ross couldn’t confirm that the officer with the Taser threatened others as well.
The name of the officer wielding the weapon remains secret as the force investigates.
“It’s an ongoing internal investigation so we’re not able to provide any further details at this time,” Ross said.
A Taser is an electroshock weapon used to temporarily subdue fleeing and abusive suspects with a sudden blast of electricity.
Used correctly, Tasers are unlikely to cause permanent injuries.
“It’s a stun. A short, sharp electrical shock,” said Ontario Provincial Police Association president Jim Christie.
“You really don’t want to encourage this type of performance management.”
The altercation is under investigation by the OPP’s professional standards bureau.
Names can only be released if an officer is called to a public hearing, Ross said, adding that no charges have been laid.
Ross did confirm that a “conducted energy weapon was unholstered by a member during an interaction with other uniformed members.”
Christie said the association will likely provide legal representation for both the Taser-wielding officer and the junior officer he blasted, since neither holds a senior management rank.
