Hey all,

I've been riding a 2009 Ducati Monster 696 for the past year and am looking to upgrade.

The bike I have in mind is an R1, probably between the years of 2002-2007.

Can anyone offer some opinions on upgrading from a Sport Touring 700cc bike to a Super Sport 1000cc.
Is this too big a jump? or Is it reasonable?

I've never dropped nor crashed ever and am not looking to start.

I was going to go for a R6, but with the long run in my mind, I prefer getting teh R1 and sticking with that bike for the long haul.

Thanks all.

For sure NO on the switch from 696 to R6 - no valid reason for that at all. I'm biased but switching from a Ducati 696 to an R1 seems silly unless you planned on taking the R1 as a track bike sometime down the line. Having the extra displacement isn't going to make anyone badass rider superstar.

Just my opinion and trying to grasp a better understanding of what prompted the switch, OP. Going from a Ducati to a Yamaha to me seems counter-intuitive. And for the record, 700cc to 1000cc jump...we can say it is manageable or not manageable but in the end it's something you need to decide for yourself once you've experienced it yourself. Not a question where a general answer will be sufficient for you.

Leaving the practicality or enjoyment of such a switch aside - I don't think it's unreasonable.

Of course Im bias cuz all I buy is R1's so take my opinion as you will, but once you get on a R1 you will realize why you made the switch! The grin factor is that much more! I think its actually more street friendly then the monster you currently ride. Its more of an aggressive bike in terms of ergonomics, but you will forget about that as soon as you twist the throttle.
Your bike now will basically feel like it was a 250! lol. Anyways, nothing good from all the R1's I have owned, so I would say come to the dark side and get an R1! I suggest the 02/03 model.

The hell is going on with everyone wanting to upgrade to the r1. There are so many better options. Am l missing something???

ergos will kind of suck if you like touring or aren't close to any good roads. Also city riding will be less enjoyable most likely.

Other than ergos it is a faster and better handling bike. And Im sure the inline 4 will feel smooth as butter compared to your ducati twin.

The R1 has more of everything, a lot more. It's a reasonable upgrade. Eleven years ago I traded in my Yamaha XJ600 for a Honda CBR1100XX and enjoyed the newfound power, speed and handling.

ajaxguy...did you start out on an R1 too?

I was born on an R1!

The ergos for a sportbike are actually not that bad! I have ridden alot of other bikes and commute daily with no real issues in the ergos department.

Monster 696 to R1? You're gonna crap your pants. But it's doable if you're smart about it.

I agree! lol

i did 9000kms in weekend trips in the last month....and my back doesnt hurt...

Why not? Seems reasonable to me.

After riding an 883 Sportster for a number of seasons, I jumped up to a CBR1000RR and after a few more I'm on a Busa.

Whenever the question of progression comes up...logically, it's not the bike that's the issue, rather the rider.

Like with anything... take your time learn the machine and it'll treat you well.
