Open face + no windshield = ????????

Can someone please explain how so many people seem to pull this look off? While scootering around this weekend (today is maintenance day) I kept getting hit by rocks, sand/dirt/mud and insects, including a big *** dragonfly that made me stop to clean my visor off. I only have experience with wearing a modular and a full-face. I question going 3/4 because I don't like having to chew on my cheeks with the full-face, but I also don't want to eat rocks and bugs. What is the secret?

Ever seen a dog stick it's head out a car window?

Plus they get extra protein in their diet.

They have a layer of sun-cured leather on their face

Its actually real simple, but involves a few steps

1) head to shoppers drug mart

2) find some good absorbing tampons in the feminine product isle

3) follow the instructions on the box

4) rock that open face lid like the bad @$$ that you are

I rode open faced but with a wind screen for years.
Then one day I got caught in a full blown thunderstorm on a US interstate.
No shelter or overpass for about 20 miles.
The rain hitting my face felt like it was leaving holes.
As luck would have it, my helmet was due to be replaced anyway.
I got a visor.
But I still ride with it up more often than not.

Rocks and bugs only sting for a second. Its the BIG drops of rain that hurt like hell @ 100km/hr. Hail is even worse. I have only been cut once from a rock on the bridge of my nose. Now when I go on longer trips I rock the F.F Shoei. Its all part of the experience of riding, like getting stung by bees or running out of gas. You have to enjoy the good with the bad.

I have no idea how other riders do it. When I did long haul trucking I saw so many riders with nothing on but sandals, shorts, and a muscle shirt. I keep cleaner and microfiber cloths in my top case to clean my shield and I can't believe how many bugs and debris end up on my shields. I could not ride without a full shield.

I don't ride in this fashion, but it appears going slow and sporting a grimace/scowl seems to be the preferred manner.

I wear the modular on my cruiser, besides looking funny in a beanie I do not need the extra protein. Seriously though I took something big smack dab in the middle of the visor on Friday, splattered but hit so hard thought it may have been carrying a rock, would not have wanted that in the face, maybe a beanie and WW2 aviator goggles?

No windscreen or no full face I can understand, won't do it myself, but I can understand. What I don't get is the guy I saw in Kitchener this evening with just a beanie. And I mean just a beanie, there was no screen on his bike, and no glasses of any kind protecting his eyes. All this on a highway.

it's all about the look man.I like the look but don't like the pain lol.

I wear a beanie on occasion while on short trips. I have a windshield on my bike but it's too low (I really do need to get around to ordering a new taller one) so it doesn't blow everything up over my head.

I've caught bugs before. Do they hurt? Sure. Do they actually injure you by breaking the skin? Nope...unless you're crazy enough to not wear something to protect your eyes, but the same thing could be said for even a 3/4 or fullface helmet with the visor up.

When I wear my fullface on longer trips or in possibly bad weather I tend to ride with the visor up most of the time.

I think for some, myself included, it comes down to enjoying the wind in your face - that's a big part of the riding experience for me, and a bug or the possibility of a rock doesn't overpower the goal of enjoying the experience to me.

Seen a guy on an e-bike/moped yesterday wearing an open face + no windshield + open mouth. I have no idea what he was trying to do.....catch flies with his mouth?

I'm no talking about a little bit open either, I'm talking wide open like he's at the dentist smiling "open wide" open.

Saves $ on protein powder.

Was down in in PA and Virginia last week. Talk about open face helmets, how about no helmets on the highway all variant of bikes, though mostly Harleys, still saw some sport bike guys with no helmets either.

There is no secret, you get hit, if you do not like it or can't stand it then it is not for you. I ride full face, though 99% my visor is open so I do get the odd bug or rock. Thankfully I do have a bit of wind protection to take the brunt of it.

Was he making any noise? Could have been blind as well, navigating via sonar

Even with a FF/Modular you get zinged by bugs when the visor is up. Even with windscreens, they always find a way, though it's less of an issue below 80 km/h. Visor down on the highway, always. A June Bug at 100 km/h stings, even if it hits you gloves or jacket.

I have an extra tall windshield + wear glasses and usually have my Symax sunshade down as well, not to mention my visor as well if travelling at highway speeds. This said I've taken a few stinging and painful hits on the cheeks from very large bugs when the visor is in the up position, some I've seen coming at the very last moment and some not. I'd hate to think what one of these things would do to an unprotected eye.
