Im taking the course next monday at georgian college in barrie, and was wondering if anybody on the forum has taken this course because i really dont know what to expect and what to study.
Any help would be great!

When I got my salesperson license I didn't take a course but was given a book to study for a few days before going in to write the test (which was open book btw) you can take a look at the MVDA 2002 act here (general regulations) http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/regs/english/elaws_regs_080333_e.htm and (code of ethics) http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/regs/english/elaws_regs_080332_e.htm. If you have a specific question about a certain section send me a pm. Don't worry though it shouldn't be too hard. Here is a summary of the Motor vehicle dealers act from the UCDA http://www.ucda.org/OpenPDF1.aspx?fileName=DealerInfo/PDF_Files/MVDA_Summary_Booklet.pdf

The course is not necessary. All you need to do is register, they will send your the course materials, study the book, and book the test (open book and 1 hour time limit) at MTO office.

ya they send you the stuff read it once go write the test its open book and easy

sounds pretty stupid to me, a course just to sell cars?

im waiting for the course the govt is going to mandate about how to tie our shoe laces, its going to be for our own saftey and it will cost $100 and be mandatory.

LOLL haha, who knows, harper is known to do stupid things .
I took the test on monday, and i passed. it was actually pretty complicated, 60 questions and 1 hour to complete it, i rushed through the test but thank god i passed lol
and i agree sarky, selling cars is alot of bs!.

Thanks for posting this.I was laid off my job of 22 years 7 weeks ago,and i'm thinking about a job where i would need the omvic.I'm hesitating tho, because the company owes me a big severance package that they don't want to pay out.I may take my lay off right thru till dec (35 weeks) and then see if they call me back or offer a package. If i take the omvic,is it on a time limit till it expires if you don't use it?

i still have the omvic book, the same thing georgian college sends you if u want it ill mail it to you, i have no use for it

It's actually quite easy, A lot of it is common sense and a lot of it has to do with the laws and ethics of selling a vehicle. Also covers advertising, what to do and what not to do...
The book is lengthy but it's an easy read and a lot of it is pretty straight forward!

I do believe that you have to be sponsored by a dealership in order to get the license, call OMVIC and double check.

Good luck!

*edit - Forgot to add that in order for you to be registered with OMVIC you must show your Georgian College certificate, which means that you have to register with GC anyways, so getting the book for someone else would be useless because either way you'll get it when you register with GC.

It is not actually useless to get the book before you register for the test. I was told by the staff at Georgian College there is 90 day window to complete the program, from the time you register for course and actually taking the test. The course materials can be found online http://www.omvic.on.ca/pdf/Georgian Cert Course.pdf

Oh ya once u pass and then Apply for a salesman license u have a lot more bs to deal with omvic, u need to get a opp criminal background check send them a copy of ur drivers license passport etc if u have a criminal record I don't think they will give u the license I don't know tho 100 % I was fine I'm a good boy

Like 2live&ride said you need to have your salesman's license registered to a dealership or it becomes worthless, I think the time period is under 6 months. Sarky is also correct about the criminal record check but to add to that they also look into your personal finances and check if you have had a recent bankruptcy or any other hiccups that you make you more likely to take advantage of other people.

Wingboy, I would wait to do the testing until you have a job lined up and are sure it's what you are going to do. You can usually start at a dealership without a license and part of your training is to go and get your license.

the teacher there told me i can register as a dealer and go to private auctions, also OMVIC has to come see my place to check if its a big enough unit for me to store and sell cars (plus they got to do a criminal check and all that b.s). I remember the teacher telling me that if you register as a salesman you need to be working at a dealership and if your not in a dealership within 2 years it will expire and you have to do the course again.

You do require a criminal background check. However there is some leniency. If you have been convicted of any charges related to theft/fraud, that would be a big no-no. It reflects on your character and the potential you have of possibly committing a similar crime when people trust you with their money and safety.

If you're actually interested in doing the test, getting your license and to start work right away... 90 days is more than enough time.
The book is an easy read and if you're serious you can finish it in 3 - 4 days and schedule your test ASAP.
Seeing as you have to register with GC anyways, getting a book from someone else won't give you a head start on anything....

BTW... If you want a guaranteed X amount of income and can't handle the stress of being under a commission only bases, selling cars is not for you.

Hi, How are you all ? about the OMVIC Certified test, I am going to have the OMVIC Certified test soon, I only got the book for 1 week, I am not sure if I canl pass the exam, Do you know any website I can download the sample of the test?

I need help from anybody who know the info.

Thank you!

The test is an open book.
Post-it notes on each section will make it easier.
You can always postpone your test, good luck!
