Olympics - what will it take to kill the corrupt IOC?

IOC says the delay will cost them a few hundred million dollars, the rest is on Japan as per the IOC contract. Japan expects the delay will cost them two to six billion dollars. This is on top of ~25 billion already spent from a total budget of 12.6 billion. ~five billion private money, 25 billion public money. That's $200 for every person in Japan in documented costs and probably a ton more in spinoff expenses. The public were told that the cost would be 7.3 billion when Japan won the bid in 2013.

The IOC operates as a non-profit with a five billion dollar yearly budget. They retain ~500 million dollars per year for administration costs. What value to they provide for that? They are basically the holder of the trademark and operate in contravention to what I believe was the spirit of the games. The games should be the best amateur athletes competing. The IOC changed it in to "the athletes and sports that can generate the most money" competing.

It is getting harder and harder to find a nation corrupt and/or stupid enough to host this turd. Will it reach a point where the world will finally tell the IOC to screw off and stop bowing to them?

I would love a complete reset. Summer games held in Greece every four years. IOC (or its non-corrupt successor) builds the venues and Greece operates them outside of olympic periods. Avoid the boondoggle that is every government in the world lighting generations of money on fire for facilities they will never use again. Similar story for winter games somewhere else in the world.

Thoughts?

Every time I drive through Centennial park snd see the fenced off unused bike track from the games a few years ago I shake my head. Why not temporary stands and trailers? The olympics would be worse. The cost to make one off facilities and then costs to maintain the unused stuff.

Great idea Let Greece host them every four years. Their economy could use some stability.

BTW the olympic five circles, they represent the minimum number of zeros in a bribe.

The old model has not been viable for years now so this year's debacle may just be the tipping point for change. Problem is the IOC is not going to be the ones to make those changes because the loss of bribes and other under the table $$ would be huge. Not sure who else would step in and organize the games in a non-corrupt environment. Japan has already said that they have NO plan B if the games get delayed again beyond 2021. Lots of $$ at stake there for sure. The idea of one permanent host for each games has been around for awhile. It would certainly be a lot cheaper to update venues from time to time than building new ones every time!

The current organization and model is too broken and corrupt to be fixed, total agreement there.

I do think that an Olympics could be hosted by a country for much less than the bonkers costs today. Key would be mostly existing facilities, which requires expanding the permitted area (distance between locations) so events can be held in a much larger area than they allow today to maximize existing facilities and then fill in the gaps with some lower cost temporary facilities.

As an example here, what if Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Kingston, Hamilton, Niagara and SWO (The Windsor--Quebec City Corridor Games) hosted a summer games, I bet we need to build very little... but that is totally not permitted in a bid. It would still cost more than it made but I bet it would be a fraction of the cost of modern games.

I see it like hosting a house party, sure people bring a bottle of wine for the host but in the end hosting the party costs way more than the combination of the host wine bottles. Not why you host the party...

Maybe they should have 5 to 8 Olympic cities that are rotated through every 4 years. The current model doesnt work, its simply too expensive for the host city.

The problem with even 5 host cities is by the time you get back around, everything is 20 years old and you are almost starting again.

I don't understand why countries are so eager to host the Olympics. It has been proven time after time that there is no economical benefit to hosting such evet.
Is it just for the prestige recognition that you hosted the Olympics in year XXXX and are now $ XXXXX, 000 000 000 in dept because of it?

Maybe there will be a day where NO COUNTRY submits a bid to host the Olympics in a given year and it would send a message to the IOC.

But than again, some of these countries are corrupt in their own way.

They are all corrupt. Olympics gives politicians a blank cheque to give to their friends/areas they want to buy votes in. Like the g7 crap where there were building gazebos hundreds of km from venues. Just an excuse to blow money. "We were so lucky to be awarded this great honor. We will spare no expense in sucking off the IOC and our constituents. Who cares if the country has to pay for this forever. What do you mean the mic is still on?".

Some countries / cities try to use major events such as the Olympics to push through some infrastructure projects that are stuck in limbo.

Not a great route, but some will state that if they get an olympics they'll have great highways/tunnels/transit whatever, and the federal, provincial, and municipal will kick in on the condition that the event is awarded to that city.

Personally I'm against the Olympics being in Toronto at any point in time, we can't afford it, we won't use the venues, and it's a total and complete waste of money IMHO.

Don't get me wrong. I like watching sports.
I recently watched the Lance Armstrong documentary on Netflix about his doping.
It really makes you second guess the things you see and the things the athletes are able to achieve. And the image they are trying to portray.

Good point.
But there is still a large debt to be paid off at the end anyways. So who is really paying for the infrastructure?

Should we bring up FIFA and the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar or is that a whole new thread on its own? ;)

Oh I agree 100%. The public pays for it, but it's a way to jump start the project.

Perfect example is the EUROCUP when it was in Poland and Ukraine. Warsaw went on a spending frenzy to update the Metro Line II, highways, bridges, roads and everything else in the area. The EURO came and went, projects were still ongoing. But they used the EURO as a jump start.

EDIT: SOCHI went gangbuster also for their olympics. Tunnels, roads, facilities, hotels, the whole 9 yard. And they pulled it off somehow before the games. But Russia is in a different ball game in terms of corruption for these types of projects so that's part of that reason.

Yes some projects were completed after the EUROCUP.
Not to mention the National Stadium in Warsaw that has a flooding issue and is empty 99.9% of the time.
It's too costly to host an event there.

Stop watching. Tell your elected officials that you don't support it, and neither should your money. Too many people jump on these projects and balloon the costs. If there's no interest, it will gradually fade away, as they have to spend their own $$$ to support themselves.

its lost all relevance , its an industry on all levels. Local sport, then you need to make the provincial team, to make the national developement team... and all the coaches and trainers get paid, equipment vendors, its EVERY level, they sell the dream.

And for most, if you pick a relevant sport, its a job. You get on the world cup, or grand prix, you keep you amatuer status by being 'comped' by your national organizing body, that are in on the take. Its your job. Mostly funded by me. F them all.

Any sport is not "for the love of the sport" anymore.

There are far too many politics and red tape around each sport. Hockey, soccer, etc are prime examples of this. Doesn't matter if you are really good at said sport, if you don't know the right people or your parent's are not buddies with the coaches/trainers you are not going anywhere.

There are back door deals even at the local amateur levels. This is the sad part about these sports that the kids play.
Not to mention they crazy antics the parents show, trying to live their own dreams of being a _____________ (fill in black) superstar through their own kids.

Haha. IOC position "Olympics will jumpstart Japan economy"

People with a brain position
"But economists and Olympic researchers contacted by The Associated Press on Friday said any economic boost will be negligible given the size of Japan's $5 trillion economy and the limited tourism and economic benefits from the 17-day games.

In some previous Olympics, soaring prices and crowding have discouraged tourists instead of attracting them.

“His predictions fly in the face of all the research on the financial impacts of hosting the games `on a good day' - and the current global crisis does not qualify as `a good day,”' Helen Lenskyj, a professor emerita at the University of Toronto, said in an email.

Lenskyj has written eight books on the Olympics, including her most recent - “The Olympic Games: A Critical Approach.” She suggested Japan would be better off if it did not have to finance next year's games.

“At this moment in history, `a very smart man' would be wishing his country did not have the added burden of hosting the Olympics,” Lenskyj said."

I knew the numbers sucked, but I didn't know they were this bad. Less than 2% ROI in year one, downhill from there.

"Matheson and colleague Robert Baumann calculated the impact of foreign tourism on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. They discounted local spending since it was simply moving expenditures from one place in the country to another.

They said Rio had 60,000 added arrivals and estimated $5,000 spending by each arrival - an impact of $300 million.

Rio spent about $13 billion to organize the Olympics, and some put the figure at $20 billion."

Between Tokyo losing their shirt on this one and Russia inevitably screwing up the next one, hopefully this scourge will be eliminated.
