Old helmets...just garbage?

I’ve got a pile of old helmets. I hesitate to just toss them out, but I also wouldn’t want anyone to use them. I’ve seen people suggest donating to emergency services for training, but I’ve called and there isn’t any interest.

What does everyone do with them? I need them gone!

Donate them to a riding school, they can use them for demonstrations and training. Even an old one is good enough for parking lot speeds, provided there's no damage to it.
I’m surprised riding schools would do this. It seems like a liability exposure they might not want!

I don't think they would let students use them for riding around the course, even in a parking lot. They tell you you need a good helmet to take the course. There are some instructors here, right? They might use them to demonstrate what happens on a slow fall???

Good timing for this thread and didn't know that the Emergency Services aren't taking them. The local firehall was my go to place for all my old helmets.

I have 2 Shoei RF1100's that are around 7 years old which I want get rid of.

Can I have them?

Yeah….highly unlikely any instructor would let a student wear a random helmet like that. The liability concerns are way way too high. Perhaps keep different kinds as props for in class, but that’s about it.

Throw one in the sun, one in a basement closet. In five years, cut them both in half and solve this debate as to whether they degrade with time.

Good idea!
Just like the gas tank debate, except this one will take 5 years:)
