Old Gas

Hey GTAM Family,

I just bought a GS500F through a private seller. The bike is amazing, except for the fact that it was sitting for months with old gas in the tank. I can feel it when I ride in first gear, but when I jump up gears, the bike runs smoothly.

I want to clean out the engine just in case. What is the best way to do this? Use high octane gas for the first couple of times? Should I use an additive?

Any help is appreciated :)

Empty the tank (ride it empty). Fill with 87 octane and put in half a bottle of Seafoam. When you fill up after that tank, put in the other half of the bottle and forget all about it.

And here comes the noob question...

Buy splitting half a bottle between two different full tanks, will I see white smoke coming out through my exhaust? Or will it ride like normal?

The Seafoam would have to be pretty much the only fluid in the gas tank to see white smoke on the GS. I haven't tested that out on a bike, it was when I was working on my snowblower and trying to clean out old gas. You don't need to get the Seafoam to produce white smoke to clean out your GS's fuel system; the previous recommendations will do the job.

Welcome to the GS500F family. We have a few guys with Gs's here. Feel free to contact us regarding repairs, mods etc.

I have an 2004 GS500 and it seems to run rough in first. The guy I boguth it from was a car guy and took care of it. He told me to use the high octane gas, is this not the case. Also excuse my ignorance but what is seafoam, what does it do? Thanks

all gs run rough at first. the bikes are very lean and take a long time to settle down from start up. lean = this means u are getting more air in the air/gas combo going in the combustion chamber.

it is advised that you rejett your carbs. mine has run a lot better since i rejetted.

seafoam is a fuel additive that will clean your carbs if there is mild dirt or old oil gunk

You may want to consider checking/replacing the oil also.
Just a thought.
