Im preparing my '09 ex500r for winter storage. I need to change the oil, i read on a few sites to buy oil specifically for motorcycles, is this true? and which one do you recommend?
For the filter, I did some research and was told to stay away from fram, ok. I found some other ones and went to canadian tire to get one, but they didnt have any on the ones I found! so where can i get some and which ones do you use?

other than oil and filter change, fuel stabilizer, wheels off the ground and take out the battery, is there anything else im missing for my winter storage?

ps. yes, this is the first time ive prepared a bike for winter storage

I use motul 5100 in my 6r, and have always used k&n filters. Check to see what your owners manual says though.

as for storage, stands if you have them, or cardboard to keep tires off cement. Stabilizer in tank and make sure to fill it right to the top with gas. I also put a battery tender on mine. Other than that, a blanket to keep her warm!

edited cause I use k&n filters, not fram . I blame the rum!

Support your local bike shop and purchase these from your local store! Eff that crappy tire stuff. As for your checklist you can either remove the battery or throw it on a tender. Cotton blanket on your baby to keep her warm.

Motul 5100 is a great oil to use. Most bike stores will have it on sale nowadays. I use only either OEM filters or K&N. There are some better or comparable filters than K&N, but usually they're harder to source.

FRAM filters are garbage, had two of those fall apart on me in the car - i.e. removed the filter, cartridge fell out of the housing. Will never use that crap again.

Amsoil MCF full synthetic oil with Amsoil EaOM or Ea15k filter.

Go to Amsoil's dealer site, punch in your postal code and start calling down the list: http://www.amsoil.com/locator/index.aspx

Don't start your bike during the winter, remove your battery and keep it indoors.

Yeah, Jamie, full synthetic in EX500... I am sure if he asked for suggestion for brakes, you'd suggest race brake pads, lighter race rotors, stainless steel brake lines, etc. It's all about costs vs. benefits, and conventional oil works great in these little bikes.

You winterize it by selling it to me ;)

Why shouldn't you start your bike in the winter?

If you start it, get it up to full running temp. Just quick on and off 5 minute starts will develop condensation in the system and accelerate wear. I find changing the oil once before winter, leaving it to sit is all I need to do aside from plugging a tender onto the battery. Cardboard under the tires also helps prevent flat spots.

You normally change your oil BEFORE winter storage, to make sure there are no acids and other crap in it that could cause corrosion, etc. I did my oil change before winter storage. When I did my post storage/winter UOA there was a large amount of fuel dilution present. This was from four or five starts and letting the bike idle until it got up to full temp (until the fans came on). I had to then change the brand new oil I had just put in before storage!

So my advice is DON'T start your bike when in storage. Put in a FULL tank of NO ethanol fuel (Shell 91, Ultramar 91), put in the required amount of MARINE (not the pink stuff) fuel stabilizer and make sure you ride it around with the stabilizer in it so it gets into the fuel lines, injectors, etc.

Take your battery out, store it indoors, connect a battery tender to it once a month or once every other month.

Your bike will thank you in the spring ;)

You do know CT is a Canadian store, and that it employs Canadian employees .... Like me

OEM oil filter in all my bikes.Full synthetic (non energ saving) of whatever brand is on sale.I usually find Mobil1 on the shelves at CT.I bought six 5l jugs last spring for $22 each. The couchrocket gets dino oil.Afterall,it's just a car engine!

I noticed that the regular Mobile 1 full synthetic is now "energy saving", and they have a new "motorcycle" synthetic that's double the price! In other news CT has Rotella T6 on sale ;)

Ah oil threads you make the day go by!

I use Rotella oil and Hi-Flo filters. Works and is less expensive.

If you are storing you bike in a heated space no issue with starting it up. If its unheated staring the bike up during the winter may cause condensation in the crank case. Condensation + combustion by-products in the oil forms a weak acid solution which you will leave sitting in the bike until you change the oil next year sometime.
