Oil Change

Hi..

Brand new to riding and just picked up an 04' GS500F...I took it to a shop to get a service and the dip-stick cap clearly is labeled "10W-40" yet the guy put in 20W-50 synthetic or something like that..do i have to continue to use that type of oil now?

Thanks.

Yeah, you do not have to use that oil from now on.

Did the service guy tell you he was putting that kind of oil in?

Did he explain why he decided to put in such a thick oil in there?

How does the bike shift when cold?

Do you have the owner manual for your bike? If not, you should. If you check in the owner manual, I'm sure they will list other viscosities of oil as well, that are suitable for your bike, depending on the temps you will be driving it in, and use of the bike.

He probably put the 20W50 in, since you're now set for the summer temps, and you'll likely be doing the bulk of your riding the next 2 or 3 months.

Yes I do have the manual, and do see the 20W50 suitable for use in higher temps. Thanks, gonna read the rest of the manual now lol.

Do your own oil changes....you'll get the satisfaction of doing something on your bike for a lot less than you would pay at a shop and you'll gain confidence to do other things on it too. That bike should be pretty easy to do changes on too. It's probably one of the simplest things you can do to your bike, promise.

Back when i let others do my oil changes (on my old VF500) a guy put 20w50 in my bike and even in the summer it was a bit more difficult to shift the bike until the oil got up to temperature.
