Trying to settle a minor tax snafu and asked for an email address to send some documents. Sorry can not do. Fax only but you can e-file and direct deposit and see all of those expensive govie websites. Ohnly Canada.

Thats because they cant guaranty the privacy of the transmission. Mind you fax can't be super secure.
 
Yeah the CRA website was hacked by some kid from UWO a few weeks ago just to prove security was ****. Access to 1200 peoples information but didn't do anything with it.
 
the reason for this is you can't prove the email was actually received, or that it went to the right place. Fax provides both of these.

To be fair he exploited the Heartbleed bug in open SSL that was discovered only right before the hack and details instructions on how to exploit it were freely available online. It affected most companies world wild (googles exposure was potentially huge) and leaves no trace of access unless you already knew about the exploit and configure a specific set of logging. Generally the CRA have some pretty stringent security standards its hard to blame them for a newly discovered exploit in a popular encryption. No system is completely invulnerable.
