Official Google+ Thread

I like the circles feature.

I have come to the conclusion that this is another one of those google projects that will FAIL and go into obscurity. Remember Google Wave? Remember Buzz? Me neither. They have some good ideas like the whole cirlce/grouping business, and Picasa is very solid and I use it anyways so as far as sharing photos is concerned it is superior to Facebook but other than that everything is just a carbon copy of facebook features except INFERIOR and less polished! If Google wanted people to switch over from Facebook they would have to make a product that's a SIGNIFICANT improvement in functionality to the point where the benefits of it over facebook would be OBVIOUS. As it stands right now though, I really don't see why anyone would use this if they already have facebook.

It is just beta right now isnt it. This could become the next big thing, depending on how Facebook responds.

It could really go either way. Google employees work 4/5 days of the week on company stuff and the 5 day is for their own Google project. That's how Google maps started; it was a side project for one of their people. You never now how something they get behind will blow up and dominate. Its true that buzz was/is terrible in comparison to other products/services they have, but the monumental success in some of the other offerings has set high expectations in everything they create.

From what I've been led to believe one area of emphasis for Google+ is privacy. They (Google) are quite aware that FB has had its share of privacy related issues (http://www.priv.gc.ca/media/nr-c/2009/nr-c_090716_e.cfm) and they are taking advantage of it to draw people from FB. In addition, there is also the fact that since they offer so many other services there will likely be a unified interface that allows people to switch seamlessly between their Gmail, Picassa and so on.

Facebook should be nervous about Google+ because if anyone has the resources to pull it off its Google. Consider how Google attracts people with genius level intelligence, it's billion dollar deep pockets, and the mega-infrastructure which can be leveraged for anything they desire.

Personally I hate social networking so I won't be on FB or Google+, however its no-lose situation for the general public, because competition is a good thing.
