Odd sensation when rear braking

Occasionally I've felt this strange sensation when I hit a small bump while pressing the rear brake with a moderate pressure at fairly low speed, e.g. braking before turning into a gas station. (I'm using the front as well.) The brake pedal will suddenly push my foot back; almost like the suspension let the pedal hit the ground in response to the bump, but I'm pretty sure that's impossible. It hasn't caused me to lose control or anything, but I don't understand the cause. Anyone else experience this? Could it be related to the ABS on this bike?

Can't tell what kind of bike you have in your profile. Do you have linked brakes?

Sorry, didn't really check out your profile that thorough. You have an SV650SA. The specs say this.

Anti-Lock Braking System monitors brake level put in and wheel speed, and matches stopping power to available traction

Maybe it is your ABS compensating.

Hmm, yeah, probably ABS. It pushes back with a lot more force than I would have expected, though.

I don't have an ABS bike.

What does it feel like when the ABS turns on with the rear brake? Go to a parking lot and slam on the rear brake. Is the sensation the same? If yes, I would guess it is ABS related.

I would fully expect that using the brake while on a bump would change the loading momentarily. The result (perhaps when clearing the bump and your suspension is now on the rebound) could be a momentary lock up of the rear wheel, causing the ABS to kick in.

I did do some emergency braking practice earlier in the season, shortly after getting it, but I don't recall it kicking back like that. I'll give a try again. Maybe I wasn't being aggressive enough to activate it.

Just lock the rear at low speed on some gravel or something... I can lock my rear easily on my driveway and it doesn't seem to make it unstable enough that I'm anywhere near dropping the bike so it shouldn't be too hard to test the ABS.

When you hit a bump while braking with ABS some systems wil activate when the rear wheel skips causing the ABS system to activate for a split second. It feels weird but normal.
