Oakley HUD

I tried this on in the Oakley store last week....amazing product. $600...not too bad. Question is how do I get this inside my motorcycle helmet?!?!?!

I would love to get my hands on just the HUD mechanism itself, minus the goggles and hack / mod it in myself, or have someone skilled do it. Anyone have any insight into plausible HUD mods?

The software on this particular HUD is terrific and has a blue tooth wrist band remote for chunky gloved fingers. This system is like 80% of the way there to motorcycle integration I reckon.

thats pretty awesome....I wonder if oakley patented the tech behind it? I know Moto helmets have blutooth, but this is pretty slick.

It's been discussed in another thread but this tech is made by a company called Recon. Oakley is just one of several goggle makers that have licensed it. And yes, you can buy the HUD unit by itself:

[edit] Just noticed an interesting use-case in the item description:

"With compatible wireless video cameras, the micro-LCD screen becomes a remote viewfinder, with access to playback and settings. Or convert the camera into a rear-view mirror to keep track of anyone trying to overtake."

worst idea ever.... "LOOKS HOW FAST AND HOW HIGH I AM!!!!" *tree smack/crash/over the gardrail/into back of 18 wheeler*

I guess the police can use the jump analysis to see how far your body flew before it became a corpse *shrug*

What!?!

So I guess they should remove all signage from the roads for the same reasoning and ban GPS's in cars? mind you I guess the speedo's on our bike should be removed as well for saftey reasons...

While the rider is getting used to using it, he'll be a bit of an additional risk on the road. But after it becomes second-nature, I think this would be a great thing.

I'd love to not need to drop my head and take my eyes off the road to look at the motorcycle's dash. Having the critical deets handy in my peripheral vision would be very handy.

Fortunately I had the chance to preview these the past couple weeks. Personally i'm not a fan as my eyes felt strained by the end of the day from focusing on the read out and then back to the hills. It became annoying over the course of the weekend to the point where ultimately I ended up turning off the HUD. All that being said the HUD ruined the excellent frame they use. The lens swapping is by far the easiest and best system I have used up to this point in the market.

Thanks for the field rest review. I hadn't thought about the fatigue and delay in focusing of the retina over the course of a day of riding. Certainly if you try focusing on the tip of your nose and the horizon in quick succession the strain is noticeable even in short bursts. That being said I also used to get nauseous when I first started watching 3D movies. Now it doesn't bother me. Perhaps it's like any muscle, vs a Carpal tunnel type thing.

Are these the goggles with the screen below your right eye? I tried them on in an oakley store and there was nothing heads up about them (maybe an adjustment issue? I don't know, they worked nothing like the video other than that tiny *** screen below your right eye). They put a tiny display way down low (think trying to look through the bottom of your goggles) and puts lots of information on it. I don't even care what information it had, it would be way safer for me to look at something on my wrist than trying to focus on that damn screen. It was just way too far out of my field of vision to be comfortable.

Manually programming GPS isn't allowed. So it's about the same..... you can have it in the car, just don't touch it.

Point taken, but I was simply reffering to anythig that may divert the eyes away. Girls in hot pants can be added to the list..
