NYE in Montreal - ideas?

The GF and I are going to spend a couple nights in Montreal (Quebec City also an option) for New Year's, and since we've never been there before, I was hoping someone would have a few what-to-do ideas.

For NYE, we wanna party with a young crowd (mid to late twenties) but in a more mature environment -ideally no clubs.
Maybe like a banquet hall or hotel party?

Any information on where to stay will be also appreciated - we'd be inclined towards a small, cozy family-ran hotel close to downtown.

Thank you in advance, peeps!

Oh yes - if there's any particular can't miss places to visit during the rest of our time there, feel free to advise :) Thanks!

If you're there for a couple of days, there is a Marriot in the Old Port walking distance to galleries, etc. More lively area to eat is La Rue St Denis. There's a good Mexican place there. I forget the name.

If you want a taste of more gritty Montreal, stop by Fremont Bakery and Schwartz's. Take a drive up the mountain too.

Many good hotels to stay at in the downtown core that are walking distance to the nightlife offered in Montreal. Old Montreal is never really that far away from anywhere and a real treat to go see. Personally, I have had good experiences at Le Nouvel Hotel on Rene Levesque and Hilton Garden Inn on Sherbrooke. Both were very reasonably priced when I stayed.

One thing I learned is that the hotel is usually willing to honour an internet travel site price if you call them and deal directly. Usually they will throw in a breakfast package that you might miss out on when you book online. Don't hesitate to call them and discuss.

If you end up in Quebec City, Chez Maurice on The Grande Allée is pretty cool, definitely more of a mature vibe there.

I haven't been in ages, hope it's still there and that you could get in.
