Notify Insurance of Upgrades?

When I first started my policy (SF) I remember them specifically asking me if I had any upgrades, anything that would affect performance. At the time, I told them about a slip on exhaust but I'm not sure if they actually made a note of that or ignored me and kept going.

In the last week or two I changed my airbox to a high flow reusable K&N (RU-2970). Figured this gives a few extra HP and should be considered a performance modification (albeit a minor one) and I should probably tell them about it. God forbid anything happens and they use not knowing about it as an excuse to not pay out.

Called them today and again I got the impression they didn't really care. He seemed more concerned that I don't have comprehensive. Not sure if that's because he wants me to get it and spend a little more, or because this stuff only matters if they're going to replace my bike.

So what's the deal? Is there a general rule when changing stuff on your bike what you need to notify them of?

An air filter is not something you have to tell your insurance about and without tuning (Hi-flow filter and exhaust it can actually lower HP On some bikes).
Just keep your receipts and call it a day. (For the exhaust, the air filter they won't care about).

If you get into Turbo's or engine swaps, thats when you notify them.

Thanks, that's the impression I got from them. I did rejet and I'm getting a bit more power, but I guess not enough for them to care.

Just wanted to be safe instead of sorry.

Probably better to inquire (anonymously) at your insurance company about turbo/engine swaps before actually doing it. Chances are they will say no unless they're specialized insurance. If you notify them, implying that you previously had coverage, they will probably drop you.

Anyone know what companies would be good for a bike with a swapped engine?

You'd probably be better off starting your own thread. People will see the title and are more likely to contribute.

Don't tell them you have a power commander, EVER! If you get in an accident rip it out and throw it in the bushes before the bike gets towed away!

That is what they are listening for. You can go full system, performance air filter, sprockets, etc. but as soon as you say power commander bye bye policy!

Last time I called in to add a bike they did not even ask if it had upgrades haha.

Its not because they don't ask that it doesn't matter. If you have any kind of performance upgrades that could void your coverage, they will do it.

That was my fear when I started this. It's actually in their interest to not ask. If they know I've done something to void my policy, they'd be obligated to stop charging. If they don't know, I keep paying for a policy that isn't covering me. Then if anything happens, my policy wouldn't be valid.
