Just wondering how hard or even if you attempt to negotiate motel rates when road tripping. Buddy I sometimes travel with does a real histrionic performance, in good humour of course, at check in. Sometimes it's good for 10%

Doesn't hurt to ask. I got 2 or 3 discounted nights on my trip last summer. That's out of 20 motel stay nights. If it's an independent not a chain, offering to pay cash helped.

Hotels.com offers 1 free night per 10 nights which can be combined with other stays for up to a year with "OK" prices. Then again, I think OP is looking for "On the go" stays where, like you say, cash can help if its independently owned.

Stopped at a Motel 6 in PA a few years back and just wanted a room. I asked the rate and was given a slip of paper with a $ number. There was another guy getting the same routine. He rejected the slip and the clerk wrote a new one. My rate was cheap enough and I was beat so just grabbed the room.

If you work for a large corporation that has an account the rates are crazy low. Sometimes a discount of well over 50% the posted.

A lot depends on vacancy rates. Forget about negotiation if there's a NASCAR event nearby.

I get the CAA discount at some places. If everybody travelling with CAA gets that discount that's a lot of $ off the bottom line. Are hotels getting that money kicked back from CAA? Of course not. But they're still happy to sell at CAA discount and make those margins. So anybody without CAA is getting hosed. That's how to treat a customer? Anyway, I've had it up to here with the way we shop these days with everything tied to incentives and loyalty. We're sheep and we love it.

A lot of national businesses have corporate rates. Even when I travel on the bike, I tell them I'm on business and have my card and ask for a rate. Also have CAA. If you are a HOG member, you can get a discount on Best Western. But, my corporate discount is better and most times, I can get a free breakfast and or upgraded room.

I think a lot of front desk clerk can spot a seasoned traveler. As soon as you mention a corporate rate or ask for a discount, they will try to give you something. They may find it amusing if you put on a performance I suppose? If you don't ask, you certainly won't get.

I frequent Marriot's, Holiday Inn, Best Western, Sheridan and Comfort Inn and the good old Super 6/8. If they are running high capacity, it won't matter much. Try and book a hotel in Montreal during the Grand Prix? They laugh at you asking for a discount let, alone book a reservation.

Comfort Inn's can be great travelling with the bike. They always give me a discount and good service etc.

I like the Delta in Ottawa. Parking underground is secure. But, if there is some event going on, the rates everywhere jump. Jazz festival? Marathon? It's nuts.

I am a piss poor negotiator, but I still get discounts on motel rooms. All I ever had to do was just ask nicely straight up "Can I get discount?" or "Is that your best rate?". No suggestive winking necessary

I'm bouncing around southern florida at the moment using priceline and Hotels.com. I suppose savings are happening. Booking using the CAA option.

We had a corporate function and they prebooked the entire hotel and 3 other hotels nearby. Prices were still 240+/night... crazy

What an overpriced dump.

I'm here for the umpteenth time. First and last time time with the cheapest mother ****er (gtam member) on earth. No signs of any dumps yet. I'll def be back..........soon.
Cheers.

I dont pay for hotels when i travel. I've earned enough points with Holiday Inn for about 20 free nights in the last 6 months by traveling for work.

I only stay at Holiday Inn and partners, I'm their super duper elite, top tier, high speed low drag member and i always get upgraded to a suite if available.

Travelling for work does have some perks i guess.

Actually planning a trip to Vegas with fiancee. Hotel, Flights and car rental will all be booked on points for free.

road tripping or vacationing I've never negotiated for a better rate, I do ask about discounts CAA/corporate disc/Professional sale group. I'll gladly take any reward program discounts but I've never done the , I see you'd like $59.00, but I'll give you $50 cash. I do steal the tiny bars of soap.

I'd gladly pay $59.00. All I want is a bed, shower and a bit of TV time before shoving off in the morning. As it stands you can fly to Cuba for 1 week all in cheaper than slummming a road trip in bug country. 14 nights per year road tripping isn't overly burdensome at $125 a night but any thoughts of turning it into a "lifestyle" aren't realistic.

ps, maybe the country should have a massive network of glorified garden sheds @ $20 a pop. That would encourage road tripping. I'm only half joking:eek:

oops, didn't mean to quote myself

i ALWAYS negotiate, just say cash price

You forgot the rest of your post;)

How does front desk respond? What's your batting average?

I was talking to a night clerk and he related the accounting bit. Rev Canada watches the books keeping because of money laundering. The motel is always empty but books $150 cash a night for every room. Suddenly thousands of dollars of drug money is legit.

That makes a lot of sense. With the popularity of street drugs these days it would take forever and a day to clear the decks selling fake submarine sandwiches.
