Northern Lights Tonight

Sometime around 1996 in the early days of my driving career I was on I81 stopped dead on the interstate about 20-25 minutes north of Watertown. There was something going on at the border and traffic was stopped northbound. Someone came on the CB and said "Everyone turn off their lights and look up" and it was the beginning of the most insane light show I'd ever seen. Like the video below.
Hundreds/Thousands of cars and trucks all just stopped on the highway, shut off our engines and lights, and got out and stared up.
Unfortunately having experienced that level of the northern lights, everything we've ever seen around here since, including tonights little show has absolutely paled in comparison.
I hope to be able to experience this again some day. It was so epic.

Yeah, it seems every really good northern lights video on YT is sped up.
Does this happen in waves? I ain't seeing **** in Grimsby
Very bright ones can move quickly...we were chasing them in Iceland and spears of intense colours came over the edge of a hill we were beside and looked like intense coloured spotlights moving around. That was the most intense we saw.
Most often then are slow moving waves that slowly change colour.
We just missed a spectacular show in Tasmania.

Should be visible tonight but won't be as strong as yesterday.
I wasn't able to stay up because of work but I setup my insta360 to record a timelapse from 8pm to 5am in my backyard. Was very faint to the naked eye but this is what the camera picked up. Hope to capture some photos with the bike tonight.
I track the aurora using the site below. The CMEs causing the aurora is usually detected about 1-1.5 day in advance of it reaching earth.
Aurora Viewline for Tonight and Tomorrow Night (Experimental) | NOAA / NWS Space Weather Prediction Center - This gives you an idea what tonight and tomorrow might look like but I have found it to be hit and miss.
Aurora - 30 Minute Forecast | NOAA / NWS Space Weather Prediction Center - This is a more accurate 30 min forecast.

Saw them last night for the first time. Meh. Slightly interesting but they weren't the awe-inspiring spectacle I was hoping for. Pictures look more vibrant than with our eyes. Almost impossible to see through windows. Go outside and look in the right direction (which was ~NW for us) and they were there.
How many of the photos show what was seen by the human eye?
People are excited to show me pics on their phone that are way more intense than anything they actually saw.
A big comet is coming soon....
C/2023 A3, also known as Tsuchinshan–ATLAS and considered “the comet of the century,” will appear in all its splendor in our sky during September and October 2024. Due to its characteristics, astronomers believe it will be exceptionally bright, similar to Halley's comet in 1986 or NEOWISE in 2020.Sep 13, 2024
