I have a Triumph Tiger 800xc. I live in Etobicoke. If I want to get genuine Triumph parts I have to go to either Hamilton or Whitby. So my stupid noob question is, can I go to any motorcycle shop in the GTA and pick up a generic oil filter like I can with a car? Are a wide assortment of filters readily available, or would the filter need to be ordered?

Yes, if there is an aftermarket equivalent for your OEM filter it's perfectly fine. Town Moto should have them, the owners ride Triumphs.
 
Pro 6 Cycle will have everything you need. Basically any shop can order a non-oem filter for you if they don't have any in stock.

No need to spend the money on an OEM filter - many car filters will fit the Triumphs.

Here's a great reference for compatible filters.

I personally use the Mobil M1-108 and the Purolator Pure One PL14612 on my Tiger.
 
Whatever you do don't use fram lol
 
K&N are easy on and off since you can use a standard socket or wrench.
