Noise Canceling Headphones

Question for those who know about these things. My wife's birthday is approaching and she mentioned that she'd lke a pair of noise canceling headphones. Her criteria: "comfortable," and "nice." Not super helpful there. Just wondering what a good deal is on these things. Looking for a decent midrange pair. Any recommendations for a solid brand or model?

I have Bose QC15's, very comfortable. But they are the large over ear type which may not be as stylish as a woman wants :(

In ear or over the ear? Price range? Mid range can mean $50 or $200

just stay away from SkullCandy...they're junk.

I've been through 15+ pairs of the Ink'D earbuds and one always dies after 3-4 months. Bestbuy would always exchange them for me but I went yesterday and they said they changed their policy to where they only do one exchange in store now.

Stick to Shure, Bose or Sennheiser. The Beats earbuds suck durablity wise as well and are waaaay overpriced.

I am interested too. But as a principal I have to stay awayfrom Bo$e. Does anyone have any experience with other brands?

I would like a pair that can fit underneath a motorcycle helmet... since people are throwing out recommendations.

Noise cancelling with active cancelling?...the Costco ones are pretty good, can't remember the brand name but they get good reviews. I have a pair of Sony over-ear type ones and they work great on flights. For passive NOISE ISOLATING headphones then you need ear canal buds and there you have a wide selection. The two are different though, the noise isolating are better for music as the noise cancelling ones add artifacts and sometimes make the music sound a little dull.

As for what fits under the helmet look at the way the exterior of the earbud is formed. If they stick out 180 degrees from your ear then they aren't going to be great under a helmet. Lower profile ones that fit more of the mechanism inside the curvature of your ear are better. I have a pair of Sure SE215 (I think that's the brand) that work well.

I have a pair of Shure in the ear noise isolating ear buds. They are now several years old and continue to work just as good as the day I bought them. Unlike Bose (better technology through marketing :p) they are passive cancelling, not active. The model I have are small enough to fit under my helmet, though I tend not to listen to any music when I ride.

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, I'm not looking to buy earbuds, only headphones. I have no idea about the differences between active, isolating etc... Up to 200$ is a rough number in my head

active use battery power and hardware to cancel out low frequency noise......isolating act like earplugs and prevent outside noise from filtering in. Active are good for plane or bus travel as they cancel out the hum of engines or drone of road noise. Isolating give slightly better music response as there's no tampering of the sound signal from the source. Active generally cost more than isolating.

My wife has the Bose QC15s. They're very effective, but outrageously expensive. Bay/Bloor Radio has a bunch of different brands available to demo, some of which were pretty close to the QC15s in noise reduction but at a more reasonable price.

I think a lot would have to do with what she wants to use them for. I have the a pair of JVC that I got from Staples for approx $50. My sons like to practice their drums and guitars and I needed something to block that out so I could hear tv. They work fine for me.
