Ninja 650R Recommendations for short rider

Hello All,

The girlfriend is looking to upgrade to a bigger bike this season and she really is looking at the Ninja 650r. She is 5 ft 2 in and 125 pounds. She is worried the bike may be too big (height and weight). Do any ladies or girlfriends/wives ride this bike that can help her out with her decision? How much can it be lowered. She is currently on a Ninja 250r.

Thanks! Any other bike suggestions and reasons for the pick are also welcome!

Did she have the 250 lowered? Because if not, I find the height the same as the 250. As for the weight... it'd probably only be an issue if it fell over.
For perspective though, my gf finds the 650r way too heavy (about the same build as your gf).

650 is half an inch taller and 50lbs heavier than the 250. Shouldn't be that much of a problem. Most aftermarket seats are lower because they're sculpted to fit your butt. I think my Sargent is about half inch lower than my stock SV seat was. People shave foam too.

I think I have seen lowering kits on eBay for this bike. You may need to check . I would go with a seat modification.

Im about the same height, and I found the gsx 600 SS is great, it will be my second bike based on the height, plus I will likely grab an aftermarket lowered seat just to make it extremely comfortable.

Is the 650 really that close to the 250? I find 250R's WAY easier to flat foot than my 650R...

www.riderforums.com and www.kawiforums.com are great places to find out about the 650R and there is quite a bit of discussion about lowering. Keep in mind several insurers (including StateFarm which is one of the most common) will not insure a lowered bike.

The Ninja 250 has a Seat height of 30.5 inches while the Ninja 650 has a Seat Height of 31.1 in. So the difference is only 0.6 in.

If she can flat foot or be close to flat footing the Ninja 250, she should be fine on the Ninja 650.

Also, the Ninja 250 has a Wet Weight of 375 lb while the Ninja 650 has a Wet Weight of 448 lb. The difference is 73LB. The difference shouldn't be noticeable unless she is leaned over.

Why not just go over to a shop and sit on a Ninja 650R on display?

I sat on the 650 and found it much different....I did not touch ground or anywhere close, I am not sure if its because of seat width as mentioned above....yet I flat foot on my 250.....Im 5'4.....I found the gixxer 600 way easier to touch ground on and I think its because the bike is so narrow similar to the 250R

Thanks for all the replies!

I think we will look at the 650r at the dealer and thow the idea of an aftermarket seat out there. She is a little nervous of the power jump between the 250 to a 600 SS so I think the GSXR will be put on hold for a few years but it is still good to know!

I'm 5'2" and had a 650R. Not even close to flatfooting it, and I had to tiptoe on either side. Of course, even though your wife and I are the same height, we may have different inseams. I had a hard time finding information on lowering the bike. The shock design made it impossible to lower with traditional lowering links (I realize there are lowering links out there on the net, but I never had any feedback as whether they worked), and other alternatives were extremeley pricey. If your wife is looking for something a little lower, I'd recommend another bike that makes lowering an easier option.

Someone mentioned the 400R. It's the exact same bike as the 650R - it will be the same seat height.
