Ninja 650

its a great first bike. i got the 2010 ninja 650 and i got to say i love it!! u will not get bored of it very fast which is the biggest pro imo. the bike is very forgiving when it comes to the brakes and throttle. very torquey which is a great pro when u have to get around in the city. riding position is something that is personal preference cause if u have ever sat on a ss u will notice that the 650 kinda feels like a cruiser (and kinda sounds like one too!!).

there's not very many cons with it for a new rider like me... but as i get more comfortable on it i noticed that the brakes can be a little to forgiving in the sense that u really have to leave a lot of space in front of u cause these things aren't that sticky (can upgrade pads to help with this...).

all in all i would without a doubt recommend this bike to any beginner or anybody who doesn't want a ss but is looking more for the looks of one!!

Its an excellent bike. Great ergo's, enought pep to get you where you're going and very forgiving.
I ride a 2011 and im 6'1" 230lbs.

Im sure you could easily enjoy it for many years and push it to its boundaries before moving on to something else.

Although this is my second bike. I started on a smaller less powerfull bike. Everyone is different , for me the 250r was a better bike to learn on. More nimble, less power, more forgiving when you make mistakes, lighter bike, cheaper insurance etc. Thats doesn't mean the 650r isn't a good starter bike. As far as the bike goes, it's a great bike as others have mentioned above. You can always customize it to suit your preferences. e.g. you can install Sport Bars for a slightly more aggressive position. Which I find helps the handling.

Anyway it's a good all around bike.

I just got a suzuki gladius today (my first time riding since my MSF 3 years ago). It's also a 650 and is quite manageable as far as weight, clutch, brakes and reach to the floor. Although the throttle needs to be finessed very gently...

The 650 is a good starter, low maintenance, and good ergos as others have said. This is my 2nd bike, I started on a 250 also, I know I could have started on this bike easily. Being taller you will probably still be able to flat foot on the bike. Which is really what beginners do like to make them comfortable (at least myself that was the case).

Pros:
Good Power delivery for a beginner, and enough to keep you entertained.
Power On Tap @ highway speeds
Good Ergonomics
Cheap to maintain

Cons:
Tank Fuel Range Not So Great
Does Not Sound Great
Twitchy Throttle

Any input on this one ?

It seems very well maintained. Didnt see anything when inspecting it. There is only one minor scratch (from storage).
Also, seller wont sell certified because bike is not insured...
He says I can get a temporary insurance, temporary license plate then drive it to a garage and get it certified. He is willing to split any expense if any for certification.

Negociated my insurance company and got a quote for a few hundred dollar more than a 250 or a 500 :)

Thanks !!

I called my insurance company this morning and they wont insure me on a motorcycle if I am not the owner.. then I cant ride the motorcycle to get it safetied... any suggestions?

The price seems reasonable. Should be able to negotiate it down to $4,000 (if hes not willing to certify it himself). I would get someone with mechanical bike experience look it over with you prior to purchase. You can always get the bike trailored to a shop for the certification then get the insurance and plates.

Cool bike, I'd also look at a Suzuki SV 650. Love that bike, it sits more like a supersport.

SV650 were pretty rare on the market in my area.

Anyway, bought the Ninja 650 !! Sooo excited, will go get it this Friday.

Another question, one of the Ninja I went to see had an aftermarket exhaust installed which made it sound really nice. Any suggestions for exhaust for this bike that arent too expensive but sounds fun ?

Which year? ... They don't make slip ons for '12-'13 you would have to do a full exhaust
Not too sure about the older models...
Check ninja shop 650

My brother has a Yoshimura slip on on his 2010 ninja 650 and it sounds awesome. also one of the best looking slip ons.

Strange. Any vehicle I've purchased I had insurance on before I had the ownership swapped over.

Did you end up getting the bike? How much for?

I have rode over 3000 kms on it and I'm loving it. Good bike to learn on, still has plenty to teach me. I commute to work with it every day and I also tour when I can. Longest ride has been 500kms, it's not the most comfortable thing ever but it's good enough ! The only con to it so far is the vibration around 4000 rpm.
