So - I have my flame-suit on, zipped up and good to go but here's my background and my question.

I'm a fairly new rider. Only been riding for a month and have my M2. I have a '10 Ninja 250 and although I like the bike for what it is - I am starting to become quite used to the performance and thus become bored. Don't get me wrong - I know that you are fully able to break the law with the 250 but I am just tiring of constantly having to bounce off the rev-limiter to get some speed. I only enjoyed the 250 because as a totally new rider, it scares you for a bit until I really hit it's (straight line) limits. Then it was more of a --- hm that's it then is it -- moment. I know I still have a LONG way to go to become comfortable leaning into a corner and I still haven't developed a sense of faith in the corners.

I'm a pretty big MotoGP, WSBK and TT fan and thus wouldn't want to consider anything other than a true SS bike.

Realistically I would stick with the 250 for the rest of this season and try to sell it over the winter (I already got insurance quotes for the 600's and they are very reasonable for me). Would any of you recommend that I hold off for at least 2 seasons before moving up to a SS or not even bother waiting and jump on one ASAP.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers.

Get the 600. Lots of people started on 600 so you'll be fine. Lots of people will disagree but it's your choice.

i stuck w/ my 250 for a season before moving to the 600.

straight line accerlation isnt the fun part of riding a bike, for me it's the turns =)

Depending on how much riding you plan on doing this season, keeping it for the rest of the reason and changing next season seems fair and responsible to me. You have a car with good performance already based on your sig, so I can see why you're getting bored of the 250 so quickly.

I started with a 600 for this very reason but not a super sport.

The choice is yours and it sounds like you already made up your mind and are now simply seeking approval for a decision you don't want to openly admit. The biggest factor is cash flow, if you can afford to upgrade and feel you are set after a month of riding then do so. Please don't think I am being rude, I'm not, just being factual I have seen so many "Should I.." threads that if I had a nickle for each one I'd have 7 dollars now..lol

All I can really say is give it some deep thought and don't get caught up in the hype, motorcycles are not going anywhere, they will be there when you feel you are ready.

Get some more mileage under your belt, not just 'time on the bike'.
The biggest difference between what you're riding now and what you want to ride, is how quickly mistakes get amplified while riding. Especially with the throttle.

Get more comfortable with corners, different types of roads (slab highways, twisty country roads, etc). Then giv'r. Some people are more ready for bigger/faster bikes than others. It's been done and will be done again. If the cost isn't the much of a difference, sounds like you've already made up your mind.

Shiny side up.

If you bought your 250 already, you are going to lose quite a bit of money switching over to a 600 within a month. I suggest you get more seat time with the 250 for at least one more season. Practice your shifting, turning, road sense, throttle control, slow maneuver, etc.

I got a few "oh-sh*t" moment when I was on my 250, it turns out okay because of the 250's lack of torque and easy control. It will be a different story if I'm on a more powerful bike let alone a SS.

I haven't even been on a 250 and jumped right into a 900cc as a first bike.

In hindsight, I think I should of gotten the 250 and ride it for at least 5000km to get the necessary basic before moving to something bigger.

Sounds to me, you like the thrill of speed, I would suggest you should keep the bike a little longer (not necessarily by months or years but by how many riding hours or km you put in riding it) Save the money and register a racing course like FAST or Racer5 and get the proper training and skills right from the start. If you like to experience the thrill of cornering in at 140+ and going over 250, get to a track and get the proper training and skills to do it on the TRACK!!

I know a guy who races 1000cc bikes but ride a 125cc scooter outside the track and would not consider getting a sportsbike ever for daily commute. He is scare of being tempted to do things he will regret...

I spent 2 seasons and 40k on my gs500 before upgrading. I understand the frustration with straight line speeds but get onto some twisty roads and you'll have no problem keeping up with the 600s. Once acceleration bored me I worked on form and technique in the corners. As others have posted, a minor slip up in the corner on a 250 is no biggie, on a SS it means your gonna be in alot of pain. Keep it for at least the season. Get it into the corners, hell even drag it out for a track day. You'll see real quick how awesome those bikes are.

Go for it ;) you should probably practice your cornering with the 250 before you make a switch, like someone said mistakes are amplified with a bigger bike. You can push the 250 more than bigger bikes without ******** your pants. Having said that demo days baby!! Go out there and test ride.

What's that they say about "It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast..."? I think I've seen that here before.

Keep the 250 for a season, pile on the miles, have fun.

A lot of you made valid points. I guess keeping the 250 a little while longer grants me:

1. Safety
2. Increased development/learning
3. Save money for a while

Whereas the 600cc's will always be there waiting for when I'm ready. To be honest, I'm going to sound like a complete d-bag now but I don't really like cornering (granted this is possibly because I'm no good at it) - but I want to learn what the fuss it about and wouldn't mind taking a track day or two this summer. However, I'm just nervous being the new guy there, holding people up and getting the one finger salute at every corner while I screw up every one else's day.

Read Total Control by Lee Parks.

I put 24,000 on my GS500F before switching to the GSXR-750. The main reason why I waited was cash and age (was waiting for 25) but I don't regret it. On the GS500F I experienced the following things I would not want to on my current bike:

1. Dumping the clutch.
2. Grabbing a fist full of front brake.

On a supersport, #1 would have been wheelie into an object, and #2 would have been eject myself into an object. Honestly dude...ride more, you can disrespect a car all you want (I've driven a GTR, M3, and GT3) and the worse it'll do is spin out. When you disrespect a bike.....go watch YouTube <_<

get the 600, u'll fall in love and have lots of sexy times ~
also easier for 2-up when u go on a date

LOL... Most people (posers aside) buy SS bikes for the agility and cornering capabilities.
Stick to your 250.
