anyone try the camera from Nikon AW100?
supposed to be waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, has GPS, movie mode and 1080p.

price range is approx. $300 + taxes

always wanted to have a cmaera and a gps. both of those in one unit would be pretty sweet.

I have Lumix TS-3 that is all of those things, pictures are a little soft, but I knew that going in. It's been kayaking, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and up a mountain and it hasn't had a problem. Check out dpreview, it looks like most users think it is decent (none of the tough cameras are fantastic).

Just so you know. The camera does NOT have a GPS, like you know it from a car or a bike. It's capable of recording a GPS location where you are taking a picture. So you can keep track of WHERE you take your images. It will perhaps show you where you are cureently, but not where to go and which road to take .... if it did, i'd buy one for 300 bucks as well.

It is definitely closer to old-school GPS's. Mine records where I am and provides compass and altimeter. If I am exploring I take a picture at the beginning of the hike so at least I have something to aim for to find my way back. Old school straight line navigation, definitely no routing.

Forgot to say ... there's more cameras with abilities of the CoolPix, it's not that special nowadays (and Nikon is not known for their compact cameras anyways).

The one problem of that camera is 16MP sensor. For camera that small (its sensor will be very small) you really don't want more than 10MP (even that is stretching it) .... believe it or not, in this compact format the less MP the better. It's been marketing war for years and it does no good to you as a consumer. instead focusing on picture quality these guys are cramping more and more megapixels in the same format sensor .... :-( No need to get caught in their game becuase there's no free lunch.

Correct it has an electronic compass and loaded maps, so it can point you certain direction depending where you are. I only mentioned it, because I felt the OP showed some excitement for camera and GPS in one body ....

Hate to be pedantic..but..GPS means Global Positioning System. The camera has a GPS unit so it can locate its position in space. It does not have a GPS navigation system like the navi unit in your car etc. with automatic mapping updates and directions etc. Sorry..proceed as planned.. :-)

LOL ... yes you got me. But I could say, how sweet can it be to have a camera and GPS in one body? As sweet as many cameras have had it before this one, right?

Anyways, only OP knows what he meant exactly.

if only.... it seems thats all i can say about this topic after researching a little more about these cameras.

they are certainly a step in the right direction and probably still a useful tool if the camera is of a good quality. these cameras do seem to have POI and like mxs mentioned it can point you in a certain direction or to your last point you were at if you took a picture. so not a complete waste of money still. :)

i did find this though.. http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/...-with-3-Touchscreenand-3MP-Camera?&cookie=set

but its not what im looking for. really good if you are hiking but not for having road routes planning.

i guess for now, we have to make do with two seperate units. :(

Sounds like you're describing a ruggedized smartphone, or any smartphone with a genuinely rugged case.

Problem is none of current smart phones will match camera for photo abilities. Most of them are just not very good. They are hiking MPs, but not necessarily the image quality and photo functions with it ... plus there's a plan to put up with every month. Better smartphones mean mandatory data plan. Gets expensive if you don't really need it.

I doubt that the garmin is very good camera ....

You read his mind pretty good apparently! :-)
