Go to some bike shops to try on jackets. Make sure you get one that fits right.

If you can afford it go for leather.

does anyone have experience with topgearleather? I just saw the website and might order from them in the near future.

All of this. If you look there's even hybrid jackets (have leather where it counts but textile or mesh everywhere else) I have one and find it comfortable yet not too hot in the warmer months.

Leather offers the best protection but it is hot. Perforated leather vents better, still fairly warm though. Definitely try some on until you get the feel of what different companies' products fit like. I bought a Power Trip leather jacket online (US) few years back for $100. It's great, I even dropped the bike while wearing it, minimal damage. Protected my shoulder and arm extremely well. Superb deal for a bargain price. Joe Rocket is a good, cheap option nowadays as well. Icon, I find, is generally designed more for show than anything else, not a huge fan. Overpriced for the quality, IMO. Never had a Scorpion jacket but I have a Scorpion helmet and it's top notch. Teknic another brand to consider for lower budget. I have 3 of their jackets - all great, the cheapest textile I got for $40 from the States.
