New?? U-Haul Policies

I attempted to rent a U-Haul van to move some stuff on Saturday. I reserved the van online but when I went to get it there appears to be some new policies that prevented renting it. So a heads up...

They refused to serve me unless I downloaded their app.
I said I don't have or want the app, too bad--no service without it.
Of course the app did not work on my phone (my guess it would not let me make an account or sign-in as I did not give it permission to access my location and other invasive stuff--or it just sucks??).
45 minutes wasted at this point, downloading and then screwing around with the app and a huge lined formed.
I had to prove to the clerk the app wasn't working to get any service...
They have asked for a second contact/phone number for a long time but now they need to call it and verify you with that person, WTF.

Problem for me at this point, my wife was waiting in the car without her phone, so there is no one to answer her cell or our home phone... I was not about to randomly try someone else to see if they will answer early in the morning to vouch for me. So that was that they refused to rent me a van.

It is too bad as customer service for me at the Queensway location was always top notch until now, we used to rent there very often (almost once per month). I rented one recently with zero issues. It is also too bad as they have decent weekend hours.

Luckily it did not rain and Enterprise rented me a pick-up without an invasive app or a second phone number to verify me otherwise I might have been screwed.

Other than Home Depot, anyone have any suggestions for renting cargo vans Etobicoke/Mississauga/etc.? Home Depot is likely the best option now but they are always slammed.

I am also surprised how many rental places close very early on the weekend (or are not open) and many no longer let you drop off after hours due to vehicle theft. I noted to Enterprise that the floor mats were missing, she said we take them out otherwise people steal them :{ .

Damn, that's the location I like to use, too. How can they not have this info on their web site, especially when making a reservation? Is it possible this location was a pilot and you can provide feedback to hopefully prevent this from going live to other locations?

It is (was for me now) a great location, across from Ikea, not far from Home Depot and Rona, finally right near a private transfer station.

I am looking for a corporate email to complain. All I can find is call in or use one of those chat bots. I did a search and there seems to be like complaints about other locations, even going back a couple of years in the US.

It’s the new world , with so many scam artists and thieves , this is where we are .

Are we talking about corporations or people? Corporations need to screw off with all of these apps and need to register for accounts for everything. For some things, it makes sense (eg itunes). For most things (eg light control on local network, renting cars, etc), app/account should be entirely optional. The data/tracking is their real product. The advertised product is just the hook.

My first thought is maybe it was about vehicle theft but all that BS is so easily defeated with a couple of "burner phones" and deleting the app right after getting the van... Then I thought for half a second who the hell wants to steal a U-Haul but it is common for thieves to use a stolen one to do other crimes...

I rented a RAM pickup from Enterprise and I got it back to them before closing--I did not want it stolen from my driveway that night...

Might as well get that UPC tatoo ready, this will become more and more of a thing. Data collection and scraping of users even when it's not really needed. Maybe the gov could update there consumer laws, digital act or something, nah why, just wait until this gets out of control first.

Either way that sucks, and seems real chitty, wonder if it's location dependant more then from corp.

The fraud industry is forcing things to go this way. I completely understand the frustration.

I work with retailers that offer financing to customers. The liability shifts to the financial institution when a customer applies with the device whereas, if they present ID at the store, any fraud is charged back to the retailer.

The fraud prevention technology embedded in mobile devices is expediently better than any live person presenting credentials to a person at the store in person.

Having the company app essentially guarantees they know the person they are dealing with when it’s linked to the device.

One of the local U-Haul "partner locations" was app only. Very annoying.
The U-Haul storage center location doesn't not have this rule, though you need it if returning after-hours.

Maybe it's only these 3rd party locations with these rules?

The app often works like old bath water.

Typically they make the change after they encounter a number of issues. If there isn’t a concern, why turn away the business?

Sorry , just wrote down a $1450 rental with enterprise Mississauga. A PIN rental and I was nowhere near that location in 45 days . Fraud is a very real problem and we are all inconvenienced by the challenges. Sorry, it sucks .

Last time I went to rent uhaul I noticed there was no free km, after I did some rough calculations on how far it was way cheaper to get a home depot truck and I noticed they allow you to reserve ahead at a bunch of locations. I had a nice bonus of a new van with only 400km.

Guess I won't be renting from U-Haul ever again. My phone that hangs on my kitchen wall won't download ANY apps. Can't text either.

With no smart phone I was thinking the same thing. No worries I own a trailer.
@just-me let me know if you to borrow it. I'd trust anyone who owns both an RD350 and CB750

More research... apparently they call this Truck Share 24/7. So that is the thing to watch out for. They require the app with tracking on and two of the following:
  • Additional Contact - Will be Called & Verified
  • Employment - Will be Called & Verified
  • Relative's Information - Will be Called & Verified
  • Passport (Not Expired)
  • Residential Lease Agreement (Current)
This is incredibly invasive IMO! Like I noted before, two prepaid phones defeats the entire system if it is intended to prevent truck theft...

U-Haul "Is this Joe Criminal's relative"
Bob Scumbag "why yes it is, he is honest and great and never steals rental vans."
Here are the keys....

There's fewer hurdles to cross the border, but who knows, maybe Trump will take a lesson from UHaul next.

Wow. Like bmd said, two cell phones and you have that licked. Just to hilight the stupidity, I would get them to call the office to verify employment and have it ring through to my cell phone. They've done their stupid due diligence, now give me my rental. As for app with tracking on, just turn it off when you are in a good location to disappear. Or even better, put the phone in someone else's truck so they are tracking something but it is miles away from the stolen truck. The path they chose seems very short-sighted. It annoys legitimate customers and is trivial for crooks to defeat.
