New to riding (and driving) and I've got a few questions about the M1 exit test.

I'll be taking the safety course with Centennial College next weekend and I was wondering if the entire test is taken in 1st gear...from the looks of the videos I have found online - this seems to be the case.

Also - does the course teach you how to shift into the higher gears when you are in the parking lot? I'm guessing that's not even close to safe. I'm just wondering because I want the skills I pickup to be immediately transferable to city driving. Is this unrealistic?

Thanks for your help.

Do all the excercises.
Learn how to
Not stall
Find friction zone
balance rear brakes and clutch to approach turns
do all the excercises
be coachable
Not be afraid to fail

Everything i learned from RTI was transferable. I drive a manual car and have had 6 years of experience on the road whiched helped. Just dont be afraid to learn and fail. Learn and be comfortable

I took the same course at Centennial College and there is definitely gear shifting involved.

Everything is super organized. They'll teach you everything you need to know to be a safe rider on the street.

Just approach the course with an open mind and willingness to learn and you'll do just fine. I never rode a motorcycle in my life before the class and I passed first time around.

Motorcycle training schools test students skills at mid second gear speed - on SMALL TRAINING BIKES - so that is like 25-30kms kind of speed!!!
Yes the school will teach you about shifting gears. I should hope so!!!!!! All the schools should. And no that doesnt mean you are going at mock speeds in a parking lot. Again these are small bikes - so they have way shorter gears and need to shift much sooner than bigger bikes. The course should have you practising shifting over and over. They may at one point, have you go to 3rd - but they will probably keep you guys in the lower end of 3rd - just so that they could teach you about engine braking and have more gears to practice it in.

FYI about learning to shift - Its just a muscle memory thing that just takes practice!!! So you will be repeating the shifting motions over and over during your course. Remember to always be SMOOTH on a motorcycle!

Have a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
