New to Bikes, Forum, Need suggestions!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and to bikes. I've been researching a bit on what bike to start with, insurance rates, and the legalities.

I've been reading the stickies on this forum, and I want to say they are incredibly helpful for someone new to bikes such as myself.

I'm most likely going to start the M1 process in the upcoming weeks, and take a course in the fall (to my understanding, I can get my M2 from passing this course as well?). Then purchase a bike in the winter/spring.

As for bikes, I'm thinking a Ninja 500r, from the early 2000's. (Should be $2000-$4000?)

As for insurance, I've been quoted at $120/month. That's a single male driver age 22, and receiving discount for having car insurance with the same company, living in the northern GTA area.

Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks everyone!

m1 is valid from 90 days from the day you pass the test
you can only upgrade to the m2 (handing the papers at the ministry) between 60 and 90 days during your m1

I read that in the motorcycle handbook thing from the ministry. I guess I'll plan the motorcycle course within the month that I can move up the the M2.

Welcome to the forum.

I am waiting for the 60 days to hand in my papers for my M2. Riders Plus just needs to know that you have done the training by way of faxing your certificate or as an email attachment. So you could still get insurance while on M1.

It's not the insurance thing at the moment. I'm planning on getting my M1 and M2 this fall and purchasing a bike in the spring. I figure I might as well start getting the license sooner rather than later because insurance with M2 would be cheaper than M1?

I think it depends on different insurance companies. I'm not sure about others but my company doesn't make a difference between M1 and M2 AS LONG AS you finish the safety course. I know one thing that does make a difference is that how long you have had your M2 for. If you have had M2 for a full year, the insurance's gonna be a lot cheaper.

So my $0.02 is that you should start getting your M2 license sooner than later.

^ Thanks!

I am also wondering if bikes tend to change in prices throughout the year? I am just wondering if buying a bike in the Fall, but not having insurance on it would be a good idea? Do the prices change much come spring time? Again, used sport 500 bike in the 2-4$ range.

yes , buy your bike in the fall or winter. much cheaper off season ,dont need to insure it until next season , and also see how much 250cc bikes for insurance. keep ur options open to get better price on bikes and insurance companies btw...

December/January is a slow month, good time to buy.

Remeber the first bike isn't your last, so don't discount the 250's, worth looking into.

Get your M2 done and out of the way asap. Just do your M1 now, do a course, wait until you've had 60 days on M1 and get M2.
Definitely buy a bike mid-winter. If you're lucky next winter will be like last and you can start early!

Welcome!!

Finally got a bike.

I shall revive this welcome thread from a year and half ago!

Below is my bike being transported in my truck. By chance, the previous owner painted it flat green, almost the same colour as the truck.

Looking forward to posting on here more.

haha yeah that's where I got it.

It wouldn't start yesterday, so the owner bought a new battery and we installed it today. Needed some loving and starter fluid but it fired up.

Tried again after taking it home and it still has trouble starting. I'm assuming it is the -15C weather? Either way I took the new battery inside and I'm leaving the bike in the garage.

There's a bike show coming up in March, great place to meet up with all the people.... schools, insurance and dealers to look at bikes. GTAmotorcycles usually has a booth so good to meet some folk!

Do you have a link to the show? I need full equipment and would love to get into the bike community.

Is there a how-to area on cleaning the carb / valve adjustment? I would like to do lots of spring maintenance on the bike.

I am sure there are some how-to faq type posts out there, I do assume it is ALLOT like the 250 so take a look at those FAQ's, grain of salt here values for valve clearance may be different. Just verify all that before you even spin a wrench. Is it modified at all? does it happen to have pod filters instead of the stock air box?
