Hey. First of all thanks to all of the posters for the awesome info on this forum. The stickies in the beginners area are fantastic!

I've been riding bicycles as long as I can remember (mountain and road). I can honestly say, I'm happiest when I'm on 2 wheels with the wind at my back. Somehow over all the years (I'm 35), I've never been on a motorcycle or dirt bike! That's about to change. I've signed up for the RTI M1 exit course for April 6th at Polson. I also signed up for the maintenance course in June. I bought a helmet, jacket, gloves and boots at the motorcycle show. I just need some jeans, oh ya and a bike!

As I said in the title I'm tall, 6'5". After doing some preliminary research, I had intended to buy a cbr250. I plan to commute 6 months of the year daily with the motorcycle, and the fuel injection appealed to me. However, it became quickly apparant that 250's are just too small to accommodate my frame. So further research had me looking at the Ninja400 and the KLR650. Sitting on a KLR650 just felt right, so I'm in the process of trying to find a decent 2008+ KLR. Unless anyone tall has other recommendations? I'll consider anything, but I'm trying to keep the price reasonable for a first bike.

By the way did anyone else's extended family members act like you had left a suicide note on the kitchen counter when you announced that you wanted to buy a motorcycle? Cause wow, I had a few pretty intense conversations. I figure riding a motorcycle has got to be safer than road riding on a bicycle. At least I can keep up with traffic and create space, rather than being at everyone's mercy.

Anyways, enough babble. I'm so excited to finally be doing this!

Cheers

Welcome!

Welcome to the family bro! (God father voice)

Just wait till you tell them you also bought a track bike and eventually want to race!

That was great to deal with at Xmas with the whole family lol

Welcome!!

How's the weather up there? LOL. Welcome aboard. Good luck with everything. You will love it.

I love my klr you wont regret your choice, the only problem with the bike is it is top heavy keep this in mind and you will be fine, you may want to google the klr as there are a few issues you may want to know before you purchase one.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm planning to get my M1 on Friday. I'm using the posted links to practice for the test, but it seems mostly intuitive.

Thanks for the heads up nearrace! I've done a bit of internet searching. The potential oil burning issue, the rubber disintigration issue and the doohickey concerns all seemed to be balanced out by a large number of people who have traveled across the country on them and love them. So, I'm open to other options but I think I'm still focusing on the KLR.

Cheers

the VStrom 650 wouldn't be a bad alternative as well. Something to consider. Good luck.

DR 650 is better than KLR in every way but 2: ergos for big guys and fuel capacity. Both can be addressed relatively cheaply. Just saying.

Welcome! Try the S1000... it's my favourite ;)

Maybe a Honda VFR800...
Depends on if you want a sportier looking bike or something more utilitarian like the KLR...

Nice lookin' bike. To start it just rev to 10K, then dump the clutch...right? :D

Ok, I was just teasing... Maybe not a good first bike, but hopefully a good 5th one for me!

The Vstrom DL650 and 1000 are both very tall, similar to the KLR but nowhere near as "dirt" oriented. I like the DL's, but having had two I'm a biased opinion! They're great for commuting too, with lots of luggage space if required.

To the OP, Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome, I have a V-Strom 650 is a great bike an it will fit you with no problem. And for does that said that is dangerous to ride a bike, it wouldn't be if they pay attention to the road when they are driving........

I got my M1 today, and to celebrate I went out and bought a bike! I strayed from the direction I was heading and ended up with a 2007 GS500F. Not what I was planning to get, but it fits well, fits the budget well and looks like it will be fun to ride. Thanks for all of the suggestions! I looked up the pros and cons of each of the bikes mentioned above.

Cheers

Congrats! and a great choice for a first ride. You'll have lots of fun!

Great first bike! Congratulations!

Now is the hard part, waiting for spring!

Congrats, I'm sure you'll love the GS500. They're very solid, bulletproof bikes that are easy to maintain. Parts are cheap and easy to source because there are so many of them, and they've basically gone unchanged since they were created. Just be sure to keep the oil topped up/watched, they're notorious for drinkin' it up.

Might I suggest looking over at GSTwin.com, their forum and their wiki both have a plethora of helpful GS500 information.
