Hi Everyone,

New rider here. Just picked up a 2000 gsxr 600. Today was a beautiful day so I decided to take her for a spin for the first time. I've had mmy license for about 2 years now, however was not able to afford a bike. After taking it up the street I quickly realized how much I suck. I was unable to maneuver the bike at all and as a result the experience was pretty scary.

Could anyone provide some tips to acquaint myself with my bike a little better before I hit the actually roads?

go to an empty parking lot and do slow figure 8s, starting wide then tightening up the turn as you feel more comfortable

practice stop and go to get a feel for your clutch

Welcome.
If you have a friend to ride with that's a +. The SRAD is a big bike so practice your turns in an empty lot. You also might want to wait till the weather gets double digits as the roads can be deceiving.

Welcome.
Best thing i did short of taking my M1 course (to accelerate my STEEP learning curve) was to pick up a Go-pro or any portable video camera.
I wear it ALWAYS. I don't have as many HOLY #$%^ moments as i used to but they happen regularly. So when i get home i watch the video.....right away. Ive learned so much and inevitably i can pinpoint exactly what i did wrong. Sometimes if i have time i go back out and practice.\
there's my tip.
ride safe
(there is also no shame in taking the M1 course as a refresher)

Like others have said, practice, practice, practice.

And when you think you're good practice some more.

Srad, my first bike. I love that bike

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll have to find a parking lot close by to practice on.

Anyone here around the Keele & 401 area?

Welcome and at least you aren't arrogant and have realized that you need some practice. Even though you had to wait two years before buying your motorcycle, what you are going through is the main reason why buying a bike directly after your M1 exit makes the best sense as that allows you to consolidate the skills learned. Ride safe my friend.

Thanks for replies guys, I had a chance to take her out yesterday and Friday in a few parking lots to refresh myself with all the controls. Most things I learned from the M1 exit course are coming back to me now. Also! I figured out that the gearing on my bike is reversed (1st up 2-6 down). The previous owner failed to mention this to me, I thought either something was wrong with the bike or I just needed to take that M1 exit course again lol.

Its called GP shift. Just reverse the shifting rod & it should be normal again or contact previous owner
