New Rider ...well, almost.

Hi there,
I'm 20, just got my M1 and am doing the M2 course this weekend.

Trying to decide what bike I want, hopefully something that won't kill me on insurance and won't be too expensive (buying used).
I'm leaning towards either CBR125 or a 250 ninja.

Suggestions?

Anything that's not a ss won't rape u in insurance. At 20 your insurance will probably be around $2000 unless you qualify for td mm.

welcome...gl with your M2.... there's lots of good deals on bikes out there right now. When you find the one you want....take someone who knows about bikes with you to look it over.

I got a quote from Statefarm for a 2011 ninja 250R and it was $1200. Not too bad. I'm guessing that fact that I'm a girl helps since I know a guy who asked for the same quote (he's also 20) and his was 3300.

I'm guessing that insurance for a 125 is going to be even less.

Welcome!

I'm 21 and have a 250 ninja. I pay roughly $2000 for insurance with Statefarm but the only thing is that they would not sell me insurance until i had 5 years of driving experience. I'm not too sure about other insurance company policies though.

Welcome to the club!!!
There's still plenty of good riding days left. Bundle up and you'll be fine. Watch for leaves though... slippery critters those are.

Thanks man, gotta get a bike first though.
I found a decent looking ninja 250 on kijiji and then started calling insurance companies to get a quote and either they wouldn't insure me because its a sports bike or because I don't have 6 years of experience.
The only one that would insure me is Jevco and the price is outrageous (3000 a year).

Help!

hmm..didn't you say you got a quote at $1300?... that 3000 a year sounds ridiculous for a 250. When did you get your G1?

Yep, I got a quote of 1200 from State Farm before the M2 and now I called them back and they seem to have forgot all about that quote... I was bitching them out for it, but they said that they can't insure me because I don't have 6 years of driving experience. I got my G1 in Oct of 2008.

It's 5 years experience. And I had the same ******** happen to me, except it was AFTER I bought the bike and had insurance. They canceled the policy a week after, forcing me to look for another insurer. They quoted me at 2200, next lowest was almost 4000 and I already had the bike so...

My last resort is seeing if I can go with my parents' insurer because I might get a discount for the bundle. The insurance is costing me more than the bike - ridiculous.
