New rider, some insurance questions.

Hi everyone.

Im looking at buying a cheap, old bike to practice on. Im looking at 70's-80's Suzuki GS and Honda CB bikes - i like the way they look, and there are some amazing deals on them this time of the year.
Im 27, married, Full G since i was 17 (currently holding AB-Z licence). No accidents or tickets ever.
I have some experience riding on and off the road (mostly off), but never held a motorcycle licence or had any formal training.

How much can i expect to pay for something like early 80's Honda CB400, CB750 ? Lets assume i get my M2.
From doing some research on these boards, most people recommend State Farm and Jevco. I called Jevco, and was quoted $2200 (CB400), 2500(CB750) a year (again, assuming a fresh M2). I was told that i need to hold M2 for a year to qualify for a discount. Still waiting on a quote from SF, but the lady on the phone said that displacement is by far the biggest factor with SF, so i shouldnt expect a cheap rate with something like a CB750 (even though its probably slower than a modern 400).

Paying 2500 a year sounds absoultely ridiculous to me. Thats almost double of what im paying for a brand new car. Assuming the SF quote is in the same ballpark, am i s.o.l. ? I read that other companies dont even insure bikes that old.

Are there any cheap bikes (under $1000) that can be insured by somebody like myself for for cheap? (cheap in my mind is ~$600 a year). I dont really care about what type of bike it is, as long as i can ride it occasionally on a public road.

Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Remember to get a car policy rate with SF as well as it will lower your motorcycle premium by about 40% with a multi vehicle discount.

Welcome to motorcycle insurance. Wait for your 1 year discount with Jevco or go with State Farm for the year. THey go by your G and by displacement, but I'm positive they'll beat 2500 which for your first year still isn't bad.

I pay around $1200/yr for a '07 GSXR600 with SF, no car/house with them. 1 Minor ticket. I believe TD also takes into consideration when you got your G1? Also ask for discounts like Professional License (lawyer, engineer, etc.) discount, Alarm discount and riding school discount.
