New Rider questions and suggestions

Hello. I am planning on getting my M1 in a few days and getting my M2 next week, I just have some general questions. I may not be getting a bike this season depending on bike costs plus insurance so I have a few questions there. I'm 19 turning 20 in a few weeks and do not have my G1 yet. If I were to get my M2 this season, and wait to ride next season will there be a huge difference for how much the insurance will be? Also, I've read on the forums that the Ninja 250 is a good starter bike. Would that be cheaper on the insurance than a 250 CBR? I was thinking of getting a 150 because they are relatively cheap (a used bike) but everyone I've talked to recommended to get a 250 because the 125 would get boring after a while. What kind of advice can you guys give me from the above?

I don't think there will be any difference in your insurance by waiting a year. Having your m2 but not riding gives you no experience so they won't lower your rates for waiting. Can't speak for the bikes though as i started on a cruiser.

You may be better off asking this question in the insurance thread.

The Ninja 250 and CBR 250 are both great starter bikes, although you'll be able to get older (aka cheaper) Ninjas because they've been around for so much longer. Don't discount the CBR 125 either - at your age I'd be more concerned with affordability and insurance than whether it will get "boring". Call the insurance companies and get some quotes to see if there's much of a difference between the 250 and 125.

Many people did exactly that. Got their license, waited one year, then got their bikes. Their insurance quote was significantly lower than after just getting their license. Of course, it's insurance company dependent.

I called a couple of brokers and they all said even if I don't get insured, having the M2 for a calendar year lowers rates significantly. There will be no difference between a 125 and 250 with your estimate. Not having your G will hurt you though if I'm not mistaken. Having my full G (I'm 20) helped with quotes since next year will be 5 years licensed.

Having your full G usually helps with State Farm a lot. Other companies are a bit more flexible.
