New rider buying a bike but unsure how to transport it to get certified

Hi

I just passed my motocycle training course and now in the process of finding and buying my first bike (Yamaha Virago 250). I have located one but if I do decide to buy it, have a few challenges. The bike is not certified or insured so I have to get it to a shop to be certified. And I also have to get insurance for it (I should have no issues on this task!).
Any suggestions on how I transport the bike from the seller's house to the garage? This is now the time when you wish you had friends with trucks but no such luck for me. I read you could get CAA to 'tow' the bike but am not sure if this is really true or not. Would appreciate some words of wisdom from riders who may have gone through the same process for their first ride.

You can get a temp permit for about 10 days to allow for certification so that you can ride it over to the shop.
Can the seller include its cert. as part of the deal?

Welcome to thw forum! Maybe ask the seller if he/she has the means to help you getting it to the shop? :dontknow:

Hey there, congrats! I bought a 535 virago on Friday! Depending on where ur taking it to be cert., they might be able to pick it up for u for a fee. As for insurance, try TD, I'm paying $520 for the season. My bike us cert. and insured ready to go. I'm taking the course in Friday. Enjoy ur new bike! :)

Where is the bike located? Where is the shop you want to use for safety?

Here's how I did my first bike. This assumes the bike is ridable and was previously ok (only missing safety paperwork).

1. See if the owner can sell it to you on a saturday morning
2. Get the VIN for the bike after agreeing on the deal and call insurance - they can send you paperwork/email temporary pink slip till the real one arrives in the mail
3. Find the closest MTO Ontario Service desk that does plates to your seller (open on saturdays till 1pm usually)
4. Buy bike, take ownership, insurance, and tax money to MTO office
5. MTO will give you plates with a "T" (temporary) sticker
6. Return to bike, attach plates
7. Ride into sunset

You have 10 days on the permit (as said above) to get it to a shop and safetied.

8. Get safety
9. Go to MTO and get proper stickers
11. Attach new sticker
10. Your dad's brother's name is Robert ;)

Hey dude you can call Rosey Toes you google it he's from weston rd. he can come to your place and certified your bike you don't need to ride just call him. cost of 80dollars ok.

Hi Everyone,
I appreciate all the advice but want you all to know that I decided to pass up on this uncertified bike since I was not feeling comfortable on taking my chances that it would pass certification easily. I ended up buying a used Yamaha Virago 250 from the Honda Milton dealer who will do the cert for me. Picking it up on Thu (they will drive it to my house!). Now I just have to get the safety gear and start my 'parking lot' riding to get up to speed. Any suggestions on what I should focus on in the next few days? I will not be on the roads much until I get comfortable with the bike.

Biggest thing to work on is becoming smooth with the bike in all areas. Keep your head up and the rest will just happen

Just picked up my Yamaha Virago 250. Waiting for the weekend to start getting comfortable in the parking lot before heading out on local roads.

Hi
I have been out on my new bike a few times now. Visited the Go parking lot and did a lot of right turns (not sure why they are so challenging but every now and then, will swing wide when starting from a full stop (and especially if there is a car sitting there!!)). Also practising the emergency stops and swerving. Also been out on the roads a bit since I have to use them to get to the parking lot. Wow, having a great time but still baby steps. Hoping to get more comfortable around cars before looking for newbie bike buddies to come and ride with me. Let me know if there are any takers once I get there. I am riding around the north west corner of Missisauga local streets currently. Will venture further once I get more comfortable, especially at speeds higher than 40 kms! :D

Getting comfortable doing roads at 70km or so (when posted ;-)). Now thinking of going north a bit to try twisty roads. Looking for some advice on what I need to keep in mind when going up hill on curvy roads and then coming back down. Obviously did some stuff at the training course but that was 2 compressed days of training and now almost 2 months ago so pretty sure I have forgotten some words of wisdom that were provided and demonstrated then. Will also check out the Proficient Motocycling book that I am reading.

Just did a couple of outings, riding north of Mississauga, and found a few places where the roads are nice and twisty. Can see why a lot of postings mention twisties!! Will still be extending my riding range but now am wondering if there are any relatively new riders ( or patient experienced riders) who might want to do a group ride and provide some pointers on what I need to improve. Have now logged close to 980 kms so now looking for company on rides that are not too fast and around 2 to 4 hours in duration. Also, another rider has suggested doing Lakeshore Road and other local roads to get to Niagara next weekend Sat. Will want to keep this ride to a small number of riders so PM me if you are interested in a leisurely ride there. I will have my GPS with me since I have never taken local roads to get to Niagara. LOL.:D
