Any recommendations for a new rider? What is the best beginner bike to buy?

There's no easy answer. The list of "standard" beginner bikes is still into the double digits. What kind of riding do you want to do, what are you looking to pay, where do you live, insurance is something big to consider, what kind of bikes do you like and finally are you ridiculously tall or short?
