New or used Honda CBR125?

Hey guys new rider here just got my m2 last fall looking to purchase my first bike sometime in the next month for the season start. Just wondering if I should buy new or used? Honda is offering a big promotion on the 125's, like $1200 off LINK http://motorcycle.honda.ca/sport/cbr125r which looks nice because the prices I've seen on kijiji are almost the same, but I'm still not sure. Any advice?

I'd go for a 250 but if your stuck on a 125 I'd go new. The new design is way better and they have a bigger gas tank.

^Agreed, the new 125 is much nicer than its predecessor, but a 250 is the better starter bike imo. The price difference is a big factor though if you're looking at new.

See I was also looking at the CBR250 as well as the Ninja 250 but I was worried the insurance would be too much because its a bigger bike.

Insurance shouldn't be much different. The 2011-on cbr125 is a much improved bike over its predecessor.

I have a 125. I didn't want the 250. (Not a new rider ... far from it.)

Seriously... I would get the new 125..simply considering the fact that people are not so kind to their 1/8th litre bikes. They thrash them around just to get them going any where. How much money do you think you are saving by buying a used 125??

I ran into a similar situation when I bought my bike, a KLX250. Used prices were a bit less but with no warranty and some general wear and tear even on a "perfect" bike it just made sense to buy new. In my case I picked up a left over bike for a great price. The only thing with buying new is that you are subject to the various fees and charges that every dealer want to charge.

get used...that $2300 will come out to about $3000...
A an older model used one can be had for as little as 1200-1500 bucks. Keep it for a season and sell it for the same price or a few hundred less and get at least a 250. a 250 can last you many seasons you'll have a hard time going more than a few months on a 125...

+1
Except I'm content with my 125 going on my second season. If I had more money, yes, I would probably upgrade, but not to a 250.
Planning on the CBR500 when I finish school and get a job.

Although if you have some extra $$ to spend, I heard the newer 125 is more stable than the older cbr 125 counterparts.
You would probably be spending around $1300 less by buying a used CBR125 though (they go for around $1700 now).

I seem to recall that Humber College would only administer the M2 Exit test if you were on a 250 cc or larger bike. I'm not sure if this is a school or Ministry requirement, but you may want to consider a 250 if you don't plan on upgrading before doing your M2 exit.

Most people who go for a 125 tend to upgrade really quickly. They are cheap, but they are cheap for a reason. People tend to trade them in about 10 minutes after they get them. My suggestion is start with a 250. That will last you a season or 2. Kawasaki has a 300 now, that I have heard is a little quicker then a 250, and it will at least last you the season.

I'd say go new. I bought an '07 125R last season and I do love it, Its a fun bike and I plan to hold on to it for another season and probably more, I also prefer it's styling over the newer model. However now that a brand new one is 2,300$, and most used sellers seem to be asking 1800-2100$, for used ones, I'd say go new, unless you're like me an prefer its looks and can deal with a slightly smaller fuel tank. Additionally, since it is an affordable entry level bike, many newbies may not be up on their maintenance/ taken good care of the bike, as I noted when shopping around.

However it could be hard to find a new one, because it may be a case where it's on the Honda website, but doesn't mean they have them readily available at your local dealer.

I think they have a retarded amount of surplus since no one bought them. At the Rock The Red event last summer we rode the crap out of 20 of them. A couple hit the ground too. Never saw someone highside a 125 before lol.

I have had my 125 for two seasons going on my third. I love it because you can ride the crap out of it everywhere and I hear the motors can last quite a while. I do have some desire to upgrade but I am happy with the 125. For me [23 male] the new ninja 300 and the Honda 250 are only a few extra bucks to insure but I hear the 250 is not much of an upgrade and the OTD price of the new ninja in quite high.

Stick with the 125 IMO it is a good starter and great fun for experienced riders too as Brian P has already mentioned. I might even look into the newer ones as the prices are quite low, cheers for the link.

Now that being said, I do have access to my brothers SV1000 whenever I want [and I do borrow it at least once a week in the summer] so maybe that's one of the reasons why I stick with the 125.

get a 250. especially if you plan on ever going on the highway.

^ I take my 125 on the highway all the time, and I'm not all that small, either. It'll do it, you just have to work for it.

That CBR125 looks like a bunch of fun on the right roads. Yorkshire Dales would be a hoot. Ontario? Kinda spotty. Pity.
