Hey everybody! Been on the site for a few months doing my research. Very informative site, haven't posted but been reading quite a bit. Got my M1 in the beginning of October and took the Humber motorcycle safety course the past weekend. Passed the M1 exit and just waiting till beginning of December to hand in my paperwork to get my M2.

I have yet to buy a bike but I've been weighing out my options. I've been looking at Kawasaki Ninja 250 and also some naked standard bikes such as Honda VTR 250 and Honda CB250 Nighthawk. I'm leaning towards the ninja 250 because I'm going to be doing some high way commuting. From the reviews I've been reading, of all the 250 bikes the ninja 250 is the best at highway speeds. Looking for some input on what others think about this.

Onto insurance. I'm 21 year old male, will be 22 when I'm looking to start an insurance policy. I've had my G1 since 2007, G2 since 2009 with no tickets or anything. Looking to get my G before getting insured on the motorcycle, especially if it will lower my motorcycle insurance. Through reading the insurance forum, I am going to look at getting insurance from Jevco and State Farm. Anyone have personal experience with them?

Hoping to have a motorcycle insurance ready for April of 2012. I don't know anyone that rides and will be looking for people to ride with when the time comes! Can't wait to get out on the road!!

Sorry for the long post

Cheers

Congrats on the passing of the course and welcome to the forum. lots of info on here I am sure some one will be able to help with your questions.

I am with State farm and I am happy with my rate for a yamaha r6. Jevco was really exspensive for me but my be different for you.
Good luck

Welcome to the forum! As for insurance shop around to find the best rate... insurance companies are weird and you'll find quite the difference out there. Good luck.

Hey,

I was sort of in the same boat as you when I was lookin for a bike. 20 years old, with my G2 - no incidents. I opted for a naked '08 GS500 instead of 250.

Also, watch out - From what I understand, State Farm only insures people who have been licensed for 5 years BUT your G1 and G2 only count for a maximum of 1 year each (no matter how long you've held them), meaning you have to hold your G for at least 3 years. Maybe I'm wrong though?

Good luck, and keep us posted. If you want to go riding next season then gimme a shout

jevco would be your best choice. I'm 21 insured with jevco on my 2009 ninja 250r. Hit me up in April i probably live somewhere near you.

I'm with Jevco as well and decent rates, but I'm a girl and I'm well over 20. I wanted to just suggest that maybe if you are thinking of the 250 to start and haven't ridden much - do minimal highway riding until you're ready for a bigger bike. Personally, I started on a 250 Marauder and the couple times I went on the hiway I really didn't feel like it had enough umph. It can be kinda scary out there on the hiway the first few months you're riding. I kept it one season and then got a 750 Shadow and THEN started doing more hiway riding.

Where in Etobicoke?

Wait until Dec and Jan bike shows, you'll get a chance to sit on the new and used bikes. Also, many insurance brokers will be there.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks for advice. I've been planning on going to both. I didn't know that there were insurance brokers there which will be nice so I can have a few quotes done of different bikes.

I live near centennial, at the border of Mississauga. How about you?

I've been thinking of getting a naked GS500 actually since it's still a starter bike but better at highway speeds which I'm going to need both for commuting and just cruising.

Did you go with jevco? Do you mind saying how much your insurance? Thanks in advance.

Yep, it's a great starter bike. It has been very kind and forgiving to me. If I could do it over, I would probably go for the regular faired version, the GS500F.. it would help at the higher speeds a little. I recently got a set of SV650 handlebars on mine, and I'm loving the riding position and new "feel" of the bike. If you're serious about getting one, send me a PM and we can arrange a meet so you can check it out.

As for insurance, I went with Primmum, and I paid 2800 for a policy that runs from June to February. A little steep, but considering our demographic.. haha

I might go with Jevco next year, I heard their rates are a little better

Do you feel that the fairings make a large difference at fast speeds?

I also like the upright riding position of the GS500 handlebars which is why I'm leaning towards getting this bike over others.

Welcome to the forum :) enjoy your bikie!

I haven't experienced riding a faired bike at higher speeds, but from what I understand, they make a big difference. I do fine though without them though:D

Welcome.

As for insurance; try Brian at J.R. Duffy (905)479-2013. They have a banner ad here. http://www.johnduffyinsurance.com/
Thank you for the input. I'm guessing you have personal experience with them?

Good to know, looks like I've decided on the fairing model.

Anyone have personal experience with fairing verse non fairing bikes at highway speeds?

Hi, I used to live in Etobicoke. And I used to be 20. Both a long time ago.
You might try TD. I use them and their rates are OK. Also they are actively seeking motorcycle clients, and they're in Etobicoke too, not that that matters much.
If you're anything like I was when I was 20, my advice: Be Careful out there!

Welcome to the forum! I'm in etobicoke as well and trying to extend the season! LoL I've been looking for a Honda VTR 250! Is it available here!? All I've seen it's not here in Canada!?
As for insurance I'm with State Farm as they were considerably lower than anyone else (31m, 1 ticket, 125 cbr) so I'd say give them a try.

OP, GS500 is a nice bike to start on. Sometimes I wish I still had mine. I'm about 10-min ride from Centennial park :)

Polak, do you think it's really worth buying an older rare bike? What are you going to do when you will need parts for it?
