New Helmet....Thoughts?

Hey guys,

Just low sided and trashed my Arai Vector 2....wondering what are some great helmets for 2014? I'm probably heading to GP bikes tonight since they have a sale.

Thoughts? (I don't fit a Shoei RF1100)

HJC RPHA-10 Best helmet I've owned and i've owned the more premium brands.

Mine. AGV GRID

I'm a little skeptical of HJC helmets....have you actually crash tested them?

WebBikeWorld have reviewed a few of them, and they have received some great reviews. You can check the crash test effectiveness on the British crash standards website online. WebBikeWorld I htink has direct links to the webpage.

+1 for RPHA10. Don't be fooled by the stigma associated with HJC's budget line. The RPHA10 is light, fits amazing for my head at least, and is Snell rated. I wear mine on the track with no reservations.

Hrm, ok I'll try one on, thanks guys!

Any other ideas? (none of the AGV's fit my head either)

Another vote for RPS-10/RPHA10. I love mine!

Do some Googling.....and find the article about how "If you're paying more than $150 for a helmet, you're buying fashion". (Sort of like the saying that if you're spending more than that amount on a watch, you're buying jewelry!

Seriously, the article is out there. (I haven't seen it for a few years, but I think it was linked out of the Hurt report at one time....or came up when I was researching motorcycle accident stats.)

So, if you "only" want to protect your head, you probably don't need to spend $500. If, on the other hand, you want to look cool..........by all means, go forth and "be good for the economy"! :)

^^^^I don't really believe that. That might be the case if you're the type of rider who goes out 5 days a year and doesn't go more then 60km/h. After just having my first crash at the track and my face sliding across pavement for 50ft, I'm 95% sure I'll continue to buy the exact same helmet because I know first hand it works.

Say what you want, and for all I know you could be right....but that's not the risk I'm willing to take when it comes to my head.

There are scientific tests for these things that prove how safe or not they are. The more expensive brands spend a fortune in marketing and racing sponsorship, which is passed on to the consumer. At the end of the day, its a bucket with polystyrene foam and straps.
Speed has little to do with it, above 50km/hr no helmet will make a difference.
The major determinant of safety is fit, and most people buy helmets that fit too loose.
What you pay more for is finish quality, durability, and lighter weight.

As for Snell approval, a lot of that is just opinion, and Snell will approve half-face helmets, meaning they approve helmets that offer no protection in up to 25% of accidents.

Go to the sharp site, and you will find that only one model of Arai is rated at 5 stars, and its the mid-range price. 6 AGVs at 5 stars, 6 Bells, 7 Sharks, only 3 Shoei.

Winner, Duchinni D832, about $100.

I went from a Shoei X-12 to an AGV Corsa and I love it. Extremely lightweight, adjustable interior to accommodate different head shapes and great graphics. Pricey, but well worth it IMO.

I still wear my X-12 on the track since it's older/cheaper.

I love AGV, but if you don't fit an RF-1100 you prolly won't fit AGV either, it's on the narrow end of the spectrum.

If I was in the market for a new helmet I'd get a Bell Star Carbon. Might be the most luxurious-feeling helmet I've ever tried, and I wear an Arai Signet-Q and an AGV GP-Tech.

Like someone else mentioned don't let the HJC name fool you. This is their top on the line helmet at everyone's else's bottom of the line price.

While on that site have a look around there are quite a few "Premium" based helmets that get lower then a 3 star rating...
