^^^^I don't really believe that. That might be the case if you're the type of rider who goes out 5 days a year and doesn't go more then 60km/h. After just having my first crash at the track and my face sliding across pavement for 50ft, I'm 95% sure I'll continue to buy the exact same helmet because I know first hand it works.
Say what you want, and for all I know you could be right....but that's not the risk I'm willing to take when it comes to my head.
There are scientific tests for these things that prove how safe or not they are. The more expensive brands spend a fortune in marketing and racing sponsorship, which is passed on to the consumer. At the end of the day, its a bucket with polystyrene foam and straps.
Speed has little to do with it, above 50km/hr no helmet will make a difference.
The major determinant of safety is fit, and most people buy helmets that fit too loose.
What you pay more for is finish quality, durability, and lighter weight.
As for Snell approval, a lot of that is just opinion, and Snell will approve half-face helmets, meaning they approve helmets that offer no protection in up to 25% of accidents.
Go to the sharp site, and you will find that only one model of Arai is rated at 5 stars, and its the mid-range price. 6 AGVs at 5 stars, 6 Bells, 7 Sharks, only 3 Shoei.
