does anyone know of a shop that hasnt switched over to the new e-test machines yet?
ive heard there are some places that are not switched over yet and are stll running the sniffer in the tailpipe.

when my carwas under warranty the dealership messed up my diagnostic system because i was complaining about a sensor that kept triggering and i was scanning my own codes, now the port is broken and i cant even run the new e-test because it is OBD2 based.

you can have opt out of the obd 2 test after you fail your first test under a certain condition (that i cannot remember off the top of my head) or you can go up north around timmins who haven't changed yet (from what my friend has told me who currently works in that vicinity)

fix the connector no big deal, go grab a connector from the scrap yard and replace your old one with the good one.

looked into the problem with the port previously, its more than just the connector. Hawley Cadillac added resisters (or something) in the wiring harness so nothing will connect to it, chasing and finding everyting they did will be next to impossible...its a mess.
my factory deck has a LAN cable that goes into it linking it to the diagnostic system so i can pull codes through there but there is no way to use the OBD2 plug on that.

i would have to replace the majority of the factory wiring harness, not just the plug... i tool the prongs out once and tried connecting them to both my scanners, no luck.

Why the heck did that shop (a Cadillac dealer!?!) add "resistors", and when?

Stuff like that doesn't just happen for no reason. WHY?

How about asking THAT shop to get you a Drive Clean - and if that involves fixing what they screwed up, so be it?

The OBDII test became mandatory last January 1.

was this car setting a security code and had a pk3 key "the key has a resister in it", if the resister was installed to by-pass the security system it still should be an easy fix.

how old is this car, hawley i think has been closed for a few yrs if im not mistaken

The light diesel test is even easier than before. I had one today....five mins and $40 later I was smiling.

Hawley Cadillac was shut down by GM.. this happened about 5 yrs ago, and i only noticed their hack job after they had been shut down.

ive had the car for about 6.5 yrs, its a 2003 CTS, they must have hacked this back 5 yrs ago...maybe more but it really hasnt mattered until now because i can pull the codes with the CD deck.
they also left bolts missing on my valve cover gasket, had a ground wire flapping around and one other thing another mechanic pointed out.
the car was e-tested 2 yrs ago on the old system, passed an put out next to no emissions. nothing has gone wrong wit the car since other than a punctured gas tank and regular maintenance.

there were a few lights that popped up around the same time, oil pressure sensor broke, security issue was another, thermostat, and something else. the security thing was weird though, i was still able to start and drive the car, windows were stuck down and the hazard lights were flashing. that turned out to just be a blown fuse.
resister isnt for the alarm, my dummy key wont start the car...just opens driver door. (fumy thing is the trunk doesnt have a key hole, only key on the car is glove box, driver door and ignition)

It never took longer than 5 minutes when I owned a diesel. You just run it and the guy comes and looks if it smokes. If it doesn't it passes. Did you do something different in the past?

Wait, how do you pull codes through the CD deck? Is it some kind of OBD interface? Or the deck itself shows you the codes?
Could you connect an RJ45 to your deck and then maybe wire it to a scavenged OBD connector under your dash?

They used to visually inspect my airbox, all intake hoses, charcoal canister, and catalyitic converter. They'd also pressure test fuel cap.
Now they start it up, look at the exhaust coming out for soot at idle, then rev it up a little bit to a steady rpm simulating crusing along (no tach on my van, so unsure of the rpm), and look for soot again. No soot? Pass. They didn't even open the hood or peek underneath the van or test the fuel cap.

Yeah I never had them do any of that whenever I had to get it tested. Went to Canadian Tire every time and the guy would literally just start it, look at the back, and away I go.

Wow, who was doing the tests before? As others have said, the old test was run the car for 5 minutes and if it smokes for more than 30 seconds you fail. (Times from memory, they may be off by a bit). I never had anyone open the hood or look under the car when I got tested.

It may be different for trucks. Last light duty diesel test was just visual smoke, now it's OBD check same as any other car.

Op, you need to fail the old one twice, meeting certain conditions between the two tests. After those tests and conditions have been met, you can go do the old test. Try google, that's how I found the relevant information when I was looking.
