Hey there

Looking to get a beginners this year and a cheap old bike... wanted to drive since I was a teen, 38 now and finally giving it a shot.

I am looking at a few bikes, wondering the opinion about them in terms of insurance, power, and parts for fixing. When I say power, I'm not looking to haul-@ss, however I do have a big one. :) I'm 6'3" tall and about 360lbs. I also work on my car for a lot of things so, not afraid to do minor work on the bikes, which is why also looking at parts for cost and availability.

Looking at

1983 Honda Nighthawk 750cc - 93,000km - $400 - apparently works but clogged fuel lines so turns over won't start.
1982 Yamaha Maxim 400cc - 57,800km - $550

Looking for the $300-$500 range, and dirt cheap insurance. I have a car insured, no tickets/accidents so insurance history is good.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Welcome!
Old bikes = Lots of TLC, be prepared to be stranded occasionally.

Sadly learned that lesson many times with cars. :D

But... just need a beginners for the next year or two for local driving, and we have 3 acres in the back to start learning with. I'm ok with the occasional problem, so long as parts aren't priced through the roof and impossible to find.

Cars, I'm no mechanic but can do all the basics like brakes, struts, tie rods, starters etc... and I know how/where to find parts and such, bikes... never worked on them before to know how easy it is to get parts from local stores.
